he was doing great. Either momma got him or the one day I put him out with some of the others someone got him. I did supervise for quite awhile and all looked good. I left him in with them to play for about 2 hours... a big mistake.

Don't blame yourself or the other goats. His bones were just not right from the beginning and you gave him every opportunity to thrive past that.

My nephew broke his femur when he was 2 by having a temper tantrum - he stomped his feet real hard and fast and then twisted and it broke in a spiral. The dr said that at different points of growth bones can be very weak.

He was probably showing off and having fun and snapped it all by himself. He had a very loved life. My admiration to you, Cathy

Oh my... I read this post, and I was worried about him, and then I was happy that he was recovering, and then he goes and breaks his poor hip and my jaw just dropped! What a terrible thing to happen to the poor little guy.... but of course in NO way your fault. (in case you thought that. I always do when someone dies.)

He was very lucky to have you in his life! Anyone else probably would have sent him to the freezer, but you gave him another chance and I'm sure he enjoyed it! Even though it was rather short, he had a wondeful life with you, the one who obviously loved and cared about him very very much. You are a special person.

I am so sorry. (((hugs)))

Thank you all for your kind words. Today is better. I can't look at his pictures on here as it breaks my heart. poor poor lil man, ah well it is what it is. I am milking momma again and getting about 1/2 gallon a day. That will help my family.
You know I always chase stray cats away. One time I decided I liked one. There was just something about him. I took it to the vet. Told them to check him over and if he looked healthy to give him his shots and neutered him, which they did. 2 weeks later kitty acted funny and had unequal pupils. Took him in for a leukemia test . he was positive. I had him put down.
I no longer take in stray cats. And next time I have a weak baby goat I will turn around and walk out of the barn.
I will have to toughen up no doubt. Animal farming is brutal.

I'm so sorry this happened to your little guy after you invested so much effort to give him a happy and normal life.

Having said that, you are right in your words above. Raising animals is brutal. Death is the logical end to life and, no matter how much we may want an animal to live, it is going to happen sooner or later. You may feel now that walking out of the barn is what you need to do, but chances are that you are going to put forth the effort when the next little creature needs your help. It's why people like us raise animals the way we do. Otherwise we wouldn't feel a thing when we lose one. The hard thing to learn is when the effort is going to make the difference. In the case of your little buckling, it looks like it did make the difference but unfortunately other circumstances came into play.

Take time to grieve and consider it a lesson learned for whatever might be in store for you next. If there's one thing I've learned, these animals will always keep me on my toes with their emergencies - usually on prom night, the day I am taking a class somewhere 2 hours away, when I'm at work, etc. They have no consideration for my schedule at all.

Raising animals IS brutal at times. Sometimes I wonder where are my brains, for taking on these things. All we can do is our best, and you did that. (((((HUGS)))))
