If I don't see signs of pain and if the animal is eating and hasn't given up I let them live. If any of those changes then I put them down. It's the only humane thing to do.

I've seen some pretty amazing recoveries without vet intervention.

it all depends on you. i get attched to everything i bottle feed. even some i havent raised up. last summer a doeling that was ownded by some freinds broke her back leg in the fence trying to get out. they didnt get the proper treatment for her and didnt want to mess with her anylonger and sent her to me. i took her to the vet, leg was infected so i spent the $$$$$$$$ to get it cut off. she has turned out to be a wonderfull doe and has grown out to be a very healthy fast doe. she will be breed this fall and i will milk her. i hate giving up on an animal that hasnt given up on its self. if you werent so far away i would take him and spoil him rotten. he would fit in fine with the other misfits i have out her that others have dumped and givin up on.

All living creatures deserve a chance if it is humane to the animal, not our hearts. We all make tough decisions every day. Money making livestock and pet livestock are two seperated ways of life. I am in no way trying to make a living off livestock, if I was my thinking may change. I would do whatever it takes to save an animal as long as my family does not suffer from it. I have nursed and rehabilitated so many different kinds of animals. A lot of heartbreak, but a lot more rewards. Do what you feel is right. You are a wonderful person. Stay strong, and never get down on yourself.

Thats just MHO.
This is an excellent post. I couldn't have said it better and wholeheartedly agree I am also on the pet side...but I do understand the livestock side and these kinds of decisions are much easier (or automatic as Vicki said) for the livestock folks.

I think you already gave the buckling a chance for life by feeding him and rapping his leg.
If you feel that every life has a destiny then the buck's may have been to give you some experience. I myself would leave it and see if it healed or if he could get by without it if it fell off. BUT at the first sign that it was having more bad days then good I would put it down.
As for the vet and the meds well I would use them but I wouldn't spend the money on surgery. Things work out they way they are suppose to even if we don't want it to.

hi. He is up following me. Skitting about hopping and playing. Vet said to not wrap it but it is getting so raw. I am going to call the vet and ask him about the surgery and if he has experience putting goats under. His foot is shriveled..it is not somethig that will come back. I do not like the odor.
I am going to ask him when he can schedule surgery.
How did I come to this conclusion. In 2 months how will I feel if i do nothing.? In 2 months how will i feel if i try? Maybe not a good logical decision, but I gotta live with my conscience. I started this when I tubed fed him, and I will follow it through to its end.
Pam do you have my number? I will update when I know something

Such a hard decision!
Keep us posted on how your little guy is doing. We all learn from each other.
Know that whatever your decision we are here for you both, even if we don't respond by posting we are sending prayers when we read.
Good luck.
Pam

I asked my vet, and its not something I can spare the money on when im trying to get a few does in my herd that are 100%.
I did not know he was as old as he was, but my vet said it shouldnt be a problem putting him under, but suggested that in the worst case he has known people to do high doses of antibotics and just let it fall off in time, not what he reccomends but people have done it, kinda like banding but with a bone I guess.
If you deside to save him I can send you some to go twards the surgery, cant do much but some.

You could make a donation account to raise money for him, and ask for donations on websites like this or even on classifieds websites.

I will come off as cold-hearted but even if I DID have the money I wouldn't do surgery. goats to me are livestock. and in your situation, I would think helping ur grandkids would be a wiser decision.

I'm not here to beat up the OP, she did the best she could. I'm really sorry she had to go through this.
