..
We goat lovers seem to worry too much at times, especially about new borns. At least that was the case for me when I initially started raising goats.
It is definately true new borns need "only" mother's milk the first 24-48 hours. Putting anything else into their tummies can cause problems down the road. Saving mother's milk from one doe to feed another is a wise idea. (I freeze mine in ice trays so I can thaw what I need more easily.) The only supplemental I give kids at birth is: 1/4 cc bo-se and a large glob of Probios Paste. On occasions I have added 1/4 cc Naxel, depending on how the kid (and dam) look. (I always place new borns with their dams in separate little pens that are partitioned off in the large barn so as to promote bonding, especially if the dam is new to motherhood. However, if the dam has given birth to more than 2 kids, I keep close eye on her. Sometimes this is overwhelming to her and she will need some support as I worry about milk fever in these instances.)
