Ammonium chloride does help and works fairly quickly. I would however give him a higher dose to get things flowing. I know you can overdose on this, but the benefits outweight the risk in this situation. Also, if you fear his bladder is going to rupture, you can get a vet or drain the bladder to buy some time for the ammonium chloride to work.

I have had this occur with a buck and also with 2 of my male cats. The cats were given a pill form of ammonium chloride and it works quickly.

Removing the pizzle can be done with a pocket knife if needed. You just need to snip off the curly string like thing on the end. If he is lethargic and such, he probably won't care or fight you on it. A word of caution though, if you do manage to get him urinating again, please, please watch him closely and don't stop the AC right away. It is not uncommon for the blockage to occur multiple times before clearing up.

If you are giving grain to any other male goats...stop immediately. Bucks and wethers do not need grain and this is a major cause of UC.

My buck had the surgery and actually it required several additional surgeries before the blockages stopped. He live another six months and the total for the surgeries only came to $150, so I would say your vet is pricing it so high you won't do it, so he doesn't have to. FIND ANOTHER VET!

Yeah, How is Elvis today!
Susanne here on HT is one of the folks that had the surgery done on one of her bucks. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks I think she said & it cost way more than $150.00 but I don't want to speak for her. She did say the surgery worked for her but another gal here told me she had the surgery done on a buck because it was her son's & he lived 6 months longer & still died.

Once they have these UC stones, you can clear them up but in my experience you have to watch them all the time. I never give grain but had to every single day give my buck AC to keep him from getting stones again. They will & most likely get them again.
Grain is alot of the culprit but it is really a calcium to phosphorus ratio that is off. High iron in your water can contribute, certain kinds of browse, there chemistry, there are so many factors.
Don't give bucks or wethers any grain, very important still, they don't need it!

My vet charged I think it was $53.00 to cut the pizzle off.
After you get him peeing, please give him the AC for at least 2 weeks as it will most likely take that long to get all the crystals, etc. through his system and definately watch him very close. I would make sure our buck went pee every single day & that I saw him go.

Good Morning!
Elvis peed last night! We tied a sheet around him so we would know and he has started to pee a little. He is still in the barn and hasn't moved, but at least he's relived himself slighty. We hope he gets up and starts walking soon! He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but I can tell he is depressed.

Keep a very close eye on him. I'm so glad he has urinated. That is a good sign. Keep giving him the ammonium chloride and just watch for signs of pain and distress. At least he managed to buy some time for you and you don't have to worry so much about a ruptured bladder.

That is such a good idea about the sheet.

keep giving him the AC. It will take quite a bit to dissolve the stone.

I had someone buy a wether from me and when she called one day I new it was not good. She gave me every symptom and I told her it was UC. She was at the Airport leaving to go be with her dyeing mother, by the time I got there it was to late. I had to load him up to have him put down. It was so hard, but it was a lot harder to see him in the pain that he was in. I hurt for that poor boy.

I would try to get him up and walk him. They tend to pee when they stand up.

I made elvis stand up tonight and he only peed a few droplets on the floor. Should I give him more AC? I am giving him 1 1/2 tsp.

How disappointing if the vet did not at least offer euthanasia if there truly was no hope.

Good idea on how to tell if he urinated!

Hang in there!

I would keep giving him the AC. How big & what type of goat is he? I have Nigerians & if it were my buck I would give him the 1 & 1/2 tsp. a.m. & p.m. for a few days then cut him back to once a day for about 2 weeks.
I would get him up & walking if possible. Also this will not break up the stones or dissolve them but put a little apple cider vinegar in his water & maybe he will drink more on top of the AC since it is salty tasting & maybe that will also help flush out his system & the stones.
Don't give him any grain at all & only grass type or a blended hay if you can.

Keep it up, your doing a good job!
