I check the cast and leg every day, make sure the animal is getting plenty of calcium, smell the cast to be sure there is no rotting smell. I leave the cast on for two weeks *if the goat will let me*. I can truthfully say that only one goat I ever splinted left the cast on that long, even after I put it back on. I've never had a leg not heal in those two weeks.
YOU are a lifesaver, lady!

I have been diligently sniffing his leg -- as close as the little blighter will let me get to it, any way. No signs of rot, and in this heat, I'm sure I'd notice! He hasn't messed with the cast at all, not even trying to chew it off. He's an odd one, our Bow Tie.

For calcium, I've been adding pulverized egg shells to his feed. He doesn't seem to notice; he eats everything after he's picked out all of the corn.

THANK YOU AGAIN for answering the phone and talking me through the process. I am SO glad we didn't have to destroy this beautiful animal!

No problem.
Hey, for calcium just keep up with the alfalfa pellets. Best form of calcium he can get now that he is weaned.

Oh, he gets plenty of alfalfa pellets. I just wanted to make sure he got enough to help that growing bone.

But if it's unnecessary (hope it wasn't harmful), I'll just save the shells for the laying hens.

No pics b/c the camera is not working. When the kids come to visit, I'll ask them to take a few pics of the animals. The goats are really pretty, for which I take no credit whatsoever. I was just really fortunate to get them from Ozark Mountain Jewels. Troubles is pretty, and Bow Tie is stunning. IMO, of course.

One of the rabbit kits got loose this morning and found a way to wriggle out of the cage. Nick found him in a pile of fur I'd pulled from Crystal's nest.

Go away, hot weather. And go away, rainy weather!

I agree with the hot weather, but could you send some of your rain to us?? We are getting dry and the grasses, clovers and alfalfa is wilting in this HEAT..........

How much does your buckling weigh? I read that you gave him 1cc banamine. The dose for that drug is 1cc per 100 pounds. The drug is hard on the rumen and other organs, so you don't want to overdose with it. I'm glad you got his leg splinted and that he's doing OK.

WOW! That is great! We had to take our bitch to the vet the other day because we were concerned about her being overdue - it was 86.00....and they didn't do anything except check her temp! The proposed c-section however was to cost up to 2000.00! We opted to take her home and things ended up going fine. Our question is where is this vet - we've already started packing!

We have found that rural vets are FAR less expensive than the ones closer in to the cities.

What would have cost us well over $200 in NE IL was only $40 here in NW MO.

We actually live off the grid about an hour out of town...unfortunately there are no rural vets here! I'm glad to hear they still exist though.
