Why did you like it? Because I think that Nubians are talkative, or because you like Frank Zappa?

My three mini nubian wethers are very talkative. And I love it. That is one of the main reasons I decided on nubians. Plus I love there long ears. I could not imagine having a goat that does not talk to me. LOL there are loud cries that mean they are ready for food. Then there is a medium cry that says come visit me. Then a low sound that means i am very happy with what I am doing and where i am at. I don't think the neighbors enjoy it as much as I do though.

I have a herd of 35 or so nubians. Out of 16 sr. does, there are 4 loudmouths. Carla, Jenna & Edith & Tess... NONE of four are closely related, none grew up together.. 2 came as adults, complete with their bigmouths, the other 2 I raised. (I have at least a daughter of each in the herd.. NONE of their daughters are loud.. Edith's grand daughter Sylvia will sometimes join in, but it's only once in a while.. thankfully. LOL) All four will yell anytime they really want something, BUT even they don't just stand around yelling. If the hay feeder runs low, they come to the house and *tell me* LOL. When it's getting close to dinnertime, they'll come up to the house and yell at the door. Of the remaining girls, there are some I'm not sure I've EVER heard a noise out of. I have way more bucks then I need. NONE of them say much (unless a doe is in heat) then a couple will bellow and call, but for the most part.. silence is all you hear from the buckyard. I have a dozen or so younger does. There are only two that yell. The loudest is a doeling out of one of those does I've never heard make a sound. ....... I honestly think the romney sheep *talks* more the any of the nubians... but unlike the nubie loud "MAWWWWW or MOMMMMM" the sheep, Mildred has a deep baw.. like a calf with a cold LOL.
I didn't want a herd of yelling, screaming, demanding does... so I NEVER, EVER feed treats. (I knew that if I got that started and they got where they saw me as some kind of human vending machine.... of course there would be all sorts of yelling whenever they saw me). I go out there several times a day and hand out.... LOVE.. everyone one gets hugs & kisses.. they all enjoy it.. but no one gets so worked up they feel the need to scream. It's a nice, calm time for us all. I didn't want people who come to the farm to feel like they were trapped in a horror movie.. surrounded by yelling, screaming, crazed creatures...climbing on them, going thru their pockets looking for fritos, raisins or animal crackers LOL... so I just never let bad habits start. As for the screamers at the backdoor... I NEVER go out while they are still there yelling. I refuse to reward back behavior. I can't even guess how many buyers have commented on how quite the herd is... or new folks who have always heard the whole loud nubian line.. they always mention how quite and calm all the goats are. I think most loudmouths are made, not born..

Oh goodness, I thought nothing of the kind! Troubles *is* one of the louder Nubians as is her mother. Her full brother is very quiet though......must be a doe thing.
Here where she grew up, she only talked to me at milking time and after she had her kids(constantly for a month, then she was over it). Not all the time.
No, I just wanted to point out that anytime you move an animal or change its circumstances drasticly, you will see it at its worst.
Peppercorn and Triumph are both very quiet goats....so your buckling will *probably* be quiet. Except during rutt when he may start bugling if separated from "his" girl.

Just had to LAUGH at this, Idahoe. Such a definitive description of the Nubian "language" and all it's nuances. You left nothing out! Maybe except "feet firmly planted shoulder-width apart to ward off a chance of falling over from all the passionate emotion-letting".

Well, ol' Bow Tie is just now testing out his vocalizations. He sounds so cute, almost like he's mewing.

Trub is calming down a lot. I'd say that the vocalizing is cut by a good 50%, loudest when she sees me and I don't stop, and when it's close to milking time.

And just who is Edith? Susie's goat?

Oh, yes she is!

I do love my little doe, and my buckling, too. I have to remind myself at least once a day that they are NOT pets, 'specially Bow Tie. He's not as skittish as he was when he first came here, which means he doesn't run away when I approach the goat compound. He'll even stand still while Trub is getting her treats, but he doesn't want to take a treat from my hand.

He is learning, though, to hold still on the milking stand -- once I have the stanchion secured.

Forgot to say that Orbie is so cool!

I'd print out a picture of Edith for Troubles, so she can see what her sister looks like, but she'd probably try to eat it instead of look at it.
