To me livestock means they make a living for me and mine. They should be taken care of and there needs met, and there company enjoyed but not given human attributes because they are not human they are livestock. I see people that move to the farm or country and try to take in any and everything and try to take care of it. It is a losing proposition in both time and money.

With the mix of pet-goat people and goat producer people (and everything in between) on HT, it's not surprising to be having a conversation like this. It's a good one to have, I think.

My goats are my beloved family, and in the same situation I'd keep the little doeling. That said, if and when she ever got to a point where she was in pain or frightened or unable to enjoy life, then I'd put her down. I'd cry for days, but I'd do it.

As for pet vs. livestock and the way we treat them, IMO it's definitely an artificial distinction. Incredible the way people can go on about a dog or cat and not give a darn how their steak got on their plates. But that's another conversation for another day

This is a homesteading forum. Who pays for this feed bill for all the pets? Is that fair to the rest of the household or the person who works off the homestead to pay this feedbill from livestock that gives you nothing for the homestead in return? The rest of the livestock will shun this kid, they know themselves there is something wrong with her and hanging out with her would instinctively tell them it would put them at risk also. It's why moms abandon kids at birth, or paw them into the bedding, they usaully know something is wrong. Vicki

These are the goats/horses/dogs/cats and on and on that will end up starving to death, being euthanized in shelters, or dumped beside the road when their 'kind' owners lose a job, have a medical emergency, get transfered, or simply lose interest.

we are dealing with animals. we can classify it as pet or livestock. really doesn't matter. at one time in my live, i was breeding cats. i had a kitten born with a severe birth defects. i could have raised it and give special attention for the rest of her life, sure. still, this animal deserved my respect at any time and it was my responsibility (because i was the reason she was born) to end this life.
last year, i had two little bucklings born. very beautiful in any way. only problem was that they had cleft palate. sure i could have raised them if tubing the milk and have a vet fix it. but we as breeder, no matter if breeding for profit or only for the homestead (with should be profitable too ) we are responsible for what we are bringing into this world. no matter how we classify an animal, it should deserve our respect.
just a reminder, not too lon ago we had a discussion about how much a goat cost per month

You know I bet if you would have advertised those bucklings someone would want them. I personally would take one. If advertised for free and you say take them or they are getting shot. Then yeah they probably would get taken.

I was given a little doeling with similar issues. She was given to me along with her normal brother when her dam had quads. I didn't know she would have these problems when I took her the day she was born. I think with her it was more than lack of oxygen, but it definately was neuroligical as well as physical. She was a purebred Nubian,, but lacked the Roman nose and never grew properly. She was sold for meat. As sweet as she was, I don't have the money to feed culls. Also, after a few months, she lost the sight in one eye. It actually atrophied.
