Hi Fishhead-
We had an issue like that...but in the summer. Yep they sure bleed! Definatly have some one hold - really tight. If he has any idea, and he will, of your intentions of touching that thing he will struggle.
We used good branch cutters. Snap and its gone. Course you have to know where you are cutting. Then you can take a soldering iron to any bleeding spots to cauterize. Soldering irons are REALLY hot so be careful.

Thanks. Do you have any idea of the safe dosages?

The tape says he's 160 lbs and the vet gave me 2.5 ml of banamine and 0.25 ml of ACE. I don't know the concentrations. They also gave me a second dose of ACE in case the one wasn't enough. I waited until today so that I could watch him. Maybe I'll try walking him afterwards although we've got a foot of dense snow.

Well it's done.

He taped out at 38.5" (160 lbs). At 11 am I gave him 2.5 ml of banamine then at 12 he was still flighty when I got near his head so I gave him 0.25 ml of ACE. After 45 minutes he didn't look any different so I hit him with another dose of ACE.

About 2 he still didn't look much different so I just grabbed him and pushed him against the wall. I held his neck in the crook of my arm and his head against my shoulder. He started to thrash around but I was able to get the shears in and snip it off without too much trouble. He was bawling pretty loud but stopped as soon as I let him go.

Then not wanting the other 2 guys to feel ignored I grabbed them and pushed them against the wall and trimmed their hooves. The first guy stood half in the shelter and watched with his head drooping. Evidently the struggle triggered the effects of the ACE.

After that we all walked around the yard and they ate dried oak leaves for a treat. The guy with the bad scur is now eating normally for the first time since Wed night.

It was definitely harder on me than him as usual. I hate seeing my animals suffer.

Not a drop. I suppose the -24 we had froze all the blood vessels.

I'm going to watch him today and if acts normally and eats well I won't give him any more banamine.

yeah...I would think that it would start feeling better pretty quick now that there isn't anything pulling on it.
