That will get you arrested for animal cruelty.
Plus the fact that salt isnt heavy enough to use as a projectile at any distance over about 40 ft.

This thread was actually moved from the poultry forum to here because the chicken powers that be didn't want to deal with any fights, resulting from this topic. I will also lock it down if it goes awry.

To be clear, I WOULD shoot the dogs if I could catch them at it. They go weeks or months without an attack and then just show up. This is due to the fact that the owner has half-heartedly tried to contain them, gets lazy and loses sight of them.

I can't poison them as I have animals of my own and it is illegal, to my understanding. I'm not willing to do anything that is illegal.

The local authorities believe that they will be able to get an order to confiscate the dogs and have them destroyed. They are seeking that order this coming week and will hopefully be successful.

Ok. from a former city girl that moved to country two years ago. Here is my advise. Get a gun and any unknown animal that crosses your property... shoot it... but not on the brain. I thought this is deliverance. They can use this for testing and diagnosing rabies. Last May 2008 my neighbors dog charged out of the woods into my property (mailbox) and bit my daughter on the leg - as she was stepping on the school bus. This particular dog tried to do it several move times. The middle school reported the event, since I pushed her in the bus... to get the dog off her. We went thru rabies vaccination for my daughter thru the whole summer of 2008. I never want anyone to go thru the same. My neighbor declined they owned the dog. The local Sheriff, Environmentalo Code Enforcement, Animal Partol.... etc. set traps... And never caught the dog. They all said get a gun. I think my neighbors destroyed the dog, since it had not been vaccinated. In any case... I hate guns, but I am starting to believe that they are necessary... when we are so isolated. Something to chew on.

Angry Still thinking about this

Even the school nurse told us to get a shot gun. Sheriff was here waiting for the bus to come for three days with GUNS drawn. They take it very seriously here in GA. Lots of rabid animals allover. What you can't do is to go on your neighbors property... at all costs. They will have the right to shoot you then, and not just your chickens. I learned this the hard way, and hope you will take note. My DH almost shot me, when we had to go to the bus stop with baseball bats and canes....for the last two weeks of school 2008.

[QUOTE=Kim_NC;3632484]Shoot the dog (yes through a window if he's so slick about running off), bury it, and say nothing more....SSS [QUOTE]

Shoot shovel and Shut Up. Here you can shoot an animal if they are attacking your livestock, but on the other hand you get some of the dumb city people that move to the country who believe they can now let their dogs run loose and then you shoot them and they find out and then they sue you for the loss of their beloved pet that they let run loose Sorry I stepped off the box.... So that is why you should always follw the rule of triple S.

Next option: rent a live trap for large animals and trap the dog and call the sheriffs dept or animal control. and keep photo proof of what the dog has been doing. I would also start charging the woman an obnoxious amount for each and every chicken killed. Something like $20.00 a bird.

At this point, don't bother about catching the dog in the act. If you are reasonably sure that this is the killer dog, then just shoot it. It should have never dragged on this long.

When I first moved out here almost 20 years ago, I was like you, worrying if it would upset neighbors, worrying about the law. Well, dang, it was MY livestock being maimed and killed!!!

Well, all these years later....to heck with all of that! Just shoot the darn thing and act like nothing happened! SSS!

Don't apologize, it indicates feelings of guilt.

Keep this in mind....once a "beloved pet" crosses my property line, it is now a terrorist...whether it is the neighbor's dog coming on my property or my dog going on theirs. I have the right to shoot their dog, they have the right to shoot mine.

That is just the way it is and we all get along fine.

So, Cliff, what's the latest word on the dogs? Were you able to get the powers that be to act?

Hi everyone. A bit more calmed down today. If this was me I would do the following. Document and back-date all the kills the dog has made (time, date, what the dog killed). Include pictures if you can - especially of the dog for record, the dog is propably dragging the kills away which will make it difficult. File a formal complaint with your local sheriff and Environmental Helth dept. Send a certified notice to your lovely neighbor. Again, kill the dog if it comes on your property. You are there to defend your livestock and family. Think... if your were to go and protect your chickens and ducks during the attack.. this dog will charge at you or your family. And in my case... attacked my daughter. And I do not need to say anymore. If you can't do the shooting.. which is my case, ask a hunter friend over for stalking - and killing. Good luck.
