I agree it's hard to tell much from a pic when the fuzz is in full gear.If he is reg. ask to see his papers. It will give you his reg # and his parents #'s and names and you can look them up.
Just an FYI about the spots, my buck is spotted and has been bred to spotted and none spotted does but you can't predict what you'll get from who.
I still can't seem to get a spotted doe
Is there anyone around you with more goat knowledge?
My buck was choosen for me by a woman with 30 yrs of breeding under her belt
I had asked about a buck. She did not own him ,had seen him and liked him the spots were an extra!!
Good luck

Not strictly answering your questions....but I am very rarely impressed by pictures of bucks in rutt, in winter, after a season of breeding. They all look pretty crappy at that time unless they hardly had any does to breed.
The way my bucks look right now, I'd never buy them.LOL!

If you like him and he is healthy go for it. It is hard to compare prices but I wouldn't pay that much without papers and tattoo. My spotted Nubian has a good pedigree I am told (I don't have any dairy experience) and I paid 300 for him a year ago. I used him over boer does and out of 20 bred , and 45 kids I got one with spots(buck). So Like someone else said if you are buying him for spots alone....

Other than color and being within an hour's drive - tell us what YOU like about him when you look at the pics.

now, here he is as a yearling. i don't see where he does not has a nice brisket?
and his ears are not bell shaped? i think his neck is pretty long too , would it be longer he would look like a giraffe
and to answer all who think i might be a tiny person, i'm 5'0 ( feet reach the ground, all that matters ) and last appraisal, as a yearling his statue was 49. now as a coming three year old, is much bigger and more filled out.
although black, he just had kids born that are spotted.

Very cute babies. I can't wait for babies .

What I like about him ?

Well he is the only purebred anything buck I can find around here, and nothing jumps out at me as overly wrong, but I don't know what to look for exactly. I am not buying him for his spots, I would take any color I just happen to like the spots . Not sure I am wanting to put out that kind of money, but I don't want a poor quality buck either .

thank you ashley

jane the best way to make a decision is to ask about his offspring. do they have some for you to look at? does he has milking daughters?
what is the goal for your herd? do you want fast growing kids for meat market? do you want to improve your milk production?
although i like to look at handsome bucks ( no ugly buck on my place )
a buck is only as good as his daughters in milk or in case of meat production, fast growing meaty kids.
of course you want only spent the money on a disease free buck.

I agree with Suzanne. I know his sire's breeder and have seen Vampress and some of her daughters. His dam is a nice looking doe, too. Did his breeder sell him to someone else or does she breed grades as well. Just be sure that the goats he's with in the photo are clean.

According to the search I was able to do he has no known progeny and is not owned by the breeder anymore. For a CAE & CL clean buck with these bloodlines you should be happy.

Patty.

I would prefer his horns being a little wider apart but other than that not much more unless I was going to show him. Even then not much.

I notice BO has a split scrotum. In Boers this is a bad trait, is dairy different? In Boers it can cause a split udder.

that is not exactly a split scrotum. i would say he might give his daughters a nice medial

in dairy goats, we do not want split scrotum either
