We've done the burdizzo. The goats really didn't like it while we were doing it, but after that seemed pretty much fine. I haven't banded, other than horns - which the two I did were upset for a couple of hours and fine after that.

I've banded goats and calves for over 10 years......thats a lot of banding and I've never had one go wrong.
Follow a few simple steps:
Band before the animal is too big.
Band before or after hot weather, not during.
Make sure both testicles are in the band before letting go.
Make sure both teats are *above* the band.

You can get a band off once you do it. You need a thin piece of metal like a nail file, tweezers if you can't slide the file under the band and an exacto knife.
I learned to never band a pair of bottle babies in the same room! One brother swore I must be giving the other a bottle and smacked me in my elbow right as I was releasing it and I ended up with one testicle in there. So I got a nail file and slid it under and then cut the band with the knife making sure I did it on the metal part. Then I had to reband the poor thing.

I like the idea of the burdizzo and that there is no open wound or rotting flesh. But you need a heck of alot of hand strength to do it. I tried it on one of my friends bucklings and my hands were shaking as I was trying to get a good line across the testicle. It did not work so I ended up banding him and the older boys.
I have had boys cry and lay in a corner shaking from banding so I wanted to go with the burdizzo, maybe it is easier if they are younger. I have been banding but I will try the burdizzo one more time this time on a younger buckling and do a banding at the same time and see who does better faster.

Does anyone have a video of cutting? I would much rather do it that way.

I give my boys Anrica Montana for about 3-4 days before I band then again for a day o two. It makes all the different s in the world.

I could get a video of cutting. I have one that I need to within the next week or two.

My father is a veterinarian, and strongly prefers crushing to anything else as long as the kid is under 4 months old. After 4 months, he prefers cutting (with sedation). With crushing he crushes each spermatic cord in two places and holds the burdizzo in place for at least 30 seconds. If it is done correctly there should be no reason to do it over. After a little while the little boys are up and active, although they are a little sore. The testicles eventually atrophy.
