How did one determine that this was an abortion and not a stillborn or other birthing complication? At what point do we not call it an abortion vs. the other things?

I didn't know either, so of course I had to look it up... ADGA defines an abortion as a a doe kidding with less than 141 days of gestation, and a "freshened" doe as one kidding with a live or dead kid at 141+ days.

I suppose it has to do with the viability of the fetus/kid. The growth rate is so fast in the last couple weeks of gestation that a kid born 10 days early is not going to survive.

very sorry for your loss. did you had a due date on this doe?

four days ago, i had twin does born exactly ten days early, between 4 and 4 1/2 pound. very tiny and fragile looking compare to what i'm used to. no hair on the belly and body hair very short. more like velvet. no lower teeth yet either. i stayed up the first two nights to feed them and suck out the mucus of their little air way. i have them in a box with a quart bottle of hot water to keep them warm. surprisingly they had a strong sucking reflex and i did not need to tube them. when two days old, they started to get up and wanting to walk but still not strong enough as the bones are like rubber.
yesterday night they can stand and walk without falling down.
very labor intensive but so rewarding if they pull through.

Thanks AnnaS, I had forgotten that ADGA even has the definition of an aborted fetus. Now I remember it mentioned on the bottom of my Langston DHI forms too.
