The most important thing is to know where the brain is in the skull.

I still remember the time in high school (at least 35 years ago) that I had a coon in my trap. I shot the poor thing between the eyes with my .22 six times and it wouldn't die. It wiped the blood away with it's paw and stood there and looked at me. Finally I shot it between the ears and it was over in an instant. I'll never forget that.

Properly placed a .22 will kill a goat in an instant and is a humane way to dispatch them.
