I have no idea how to thank you all... Mom is still seeming to be in labor to me but not in any kind of stress... she has taken a good amount of molasses water and plain water and even eaten some grain plus some bounce back....I brought the baby in to show hubby wehn he got home tonight and I guess that is all it took cause when I put the baby back ith Mom he went right for her teat and started to suck. I hope he got something but, atleast I know he knows where to find it... Mom is licking him and layig by him when she lays down... wow this is more tiring than my own child birth and I wnet completly natural.... I'll keep you all updated and please continue with advise... I don't want to loose Mom... she is my baby... hopefully she is just trying to get rid of some after birth.

if you went in and felt absolutely nothing, then she's done and just trying to pass afterbirth. IMO if there was a baby there you'd feel it.
I know alot of people use molasas (spelling) in water, haven't tried it yet, i use gatorade, yeah it's kinda espensive but the girls really lap it up after birthing! and I have a couple older girls that don't bag up like they should, but the gatorade helps them alot.
anyhow, best of luck to you and the new kid!! GET PICS!

I believe what you might have felt when you hit that "wall" was the cervix. If you moved your hand around a little more you would have been able to find an opening. You did very well.
Give the kid a BoSe shot as soon as you can. You did good in giving the mother molasses water. Nice. Since you did not feel any kids, she is probably just trying to expel the placenta.
Keep us posted. You did beautifully. And yes.... I know how tiring it can be. Ugh! But it is SOOOOO worth it, don't you think?
I'm glad the kid nursed. Good. Oh I almost forgot. This is VITAL. You must dip the kid's umbilical cord in iodine or an iodine solution right away. Since it sounds like a buckling, be careful not to dip his "you know what" as well. Put some in a small paper cup or some such thing. With the kid in the standing position bring the cup underneath his belly (be sure to miss, you know what) put the cup up against the belly. Hold it there. While holding it there, with your other arm take the kid and tip him over. This makes sure the iodine gets everything.
You might have already done this. I hope so. It should be done right after birth.
Congrats on the new kid!!!! Yippee!

Well, I thank you all so very much...Of course I didn't sleep all night... going down and worring but, Mom and baby are doing great this am and I am off to the feed store to get what ever I need for them... when you say a shot of BOSE you mean an actual shot? if so where do I give it? He seems so tiny and skinny... can I give some thing by mouth? I have dipped his cord but, I think Mom licked it off right after I did it... I didn't think about not getting it on his "his" I hope I didn't... I did it yesterday when all was happening... I have taken pics just got to get them loaded... If I say so myself he is the prettiest little thing... Don't all new Grandmoms say that though...LOL I have been using Ivectermin to worm... is tht okay to give Mom after birth?
Also, I was sondering how long does she have the colostrum? I was jsut wondering if I could milk her and still freeze some? I got some froze yesterday just in case.
Thanks again everyone, You all are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning! Glad everything is going good yes you can use ivermectin on mama. Give it orally 1cc per 35lbs. I do believe you have to get Bose from a vet. I'm not in a selenium deficient area so I didn't need it. I'm not sure on the colostrum question....I'm sure someone else will know. Can't wait for pictures!

From what I have been told, the baby can only absorb the nutrients from the colostrum within the first 12-24 hours. Freezing the remaining is a very good idea. Believe it or not, I give extra to my 17 year old cat to give her a boost. She does well on goat milk when I have it. Also, I use Zimectrin Gold for my horse and goats, but Ivermectrin is good too. I try to do most of my injections sub-q because I always seem to screw up the IM. It's seems easier for me to just lift up some skin and poke. Just make sure you don't go through the other side- I've done that and it makes me feel like c**p. Keep us posted and the pics too.

You're not in a selenium-deficient area, I believe (Southern Alabama is supposed to be good) but the property you have your goats on could be deficient, especially if certain crops were grown there in the past. Also, if you, like many others, keep your goats confined in too small of an area and they have nothing but hay and grain to eat (no browse) then they could get a selenium deficiency.
I don't use the shots. I use a feed supplement that has some selenium in it. Consider that it's a trace mineral and an animal needs only a very small amount. The baby gets the selenium from the mother in the milk.

You can give this shot of BoSe subQ (just under the skin) behind it's front shoulder area. OR IM (intramuscular) in the muscle on its rump. BoSe is something you can buy from your vet.
Yes, you should worm the mother after kidding.
Goats usually have colostrum for about two days.
My last kid's dam licked it off two or three times, I just went back and dipped three times that day within a few hours time.
I bet that little one is just a sweet little thing. Are you able to post a pic or two? We'd love to see him!

I learned MY lesson the hard way regarding selenium. If you have been feeding over winter, it depends on where your feed was GROWN, not where you live. In my area, some people routinely do BoSe shots; others do not. I did not understand why, and my tendency is to do less rather than more in terms of intervention. I did provide a good quality free-choice goat mineral, and I thought that would be sufficient.
It wasn't. Both my first kiddings were messed up by selenium deficiency, causing the loss of one beautiful kid - naturally, the only doeling of the year. Selenium injections for the remaining most deficient kid and both moms seem to have headed off any further problems. Symptoms: One kid was so weak and wobbly that it could not stand for two days, and then was slow to come around. He may have suffered irreversible damage - we won't know that for some time.
When I looked at the detail on the USGS map, I discovered that my county is among the most deficient. Right next door, the neighboring county is less so. Those who do not give the BoSe shots in this area are simply living on borrowed time, IMO. It's a crap shoot where their hay might have come from, unless they've grown it themselves and have had it tested.
That's what I found out about my mentor-friend. They always purchase their hay from a local USDA agricultural research center, and it's always tested. I bought mine from a local hay dealer and didn't have it tested. When I asked my vet if we should routinely test our hay, he chuckled and replied that most people around here just do the shots.
This brings up a question I have, for which I think I'll start a new thread with its own subject line.
Cheers,
Anita
