I stake my three Boer goats around as 'weed control' and 'leaf cleanup crew' and haven't had any problems. One of my gals always seems to find a way to get tangled, so I don't leave them if I'm going to be gone a long time and not able to check up on them. They seem to enjoy it and it gives their small paddock a break.

Hi everybody. Wife & I just joined, first post. I think I've tried every angle to the lawnmower/goat thing, with limited degrees of success/failure. In theory, goats are the perfect lawnmowers.(In Scottland I believe they're still used to maintain the greens of some golf course's as well as providing early warning of lighting.) But the fly in the buttermilk is Wife's insistance on growing flowers, shubs, trees & other goat delicacies so simply fencing the yard is out. The tether thing works, but only under close supervision, even with swivels they still manage to get tangled, also the dog/preditor thing to consider. Tried the electric fence, kinda worked, sort of. My real brain child, what I thought was the answer to all these short comings & would assure a place for me in the goat ranchers hall-o-fame. My invention, the "Goat-o-matic" as seen on television, yes folks, it slices, it dices........anyway. It consisted mainly of four fence panels clamped together to form a square with swivel clips in one corner for easier opening & closing. Simply install 3 to 5 goats & 'wala!!!! you instantly have a 16' square goat pen. when they finish mowing that portion, move it over 16'..... it worked great. The one flaw in this masterpiece of inventive genius was in the goats themselves, evil geniuses that they are. When noone was lookin' they figured out that if they all pushed on one side together, they could move it themselves, right up against Wifes rose bushes. So much for any expectations of fame & fortune. Anyway. Good luck on all your "Goat" endeavors, & always remember, 'a good fence makes a good goat' Bob

I do not have trees, bushes, or anything but grass and weeds. My goats look great and I hardly ever have to mow our 10 acres.
I do believe the only reason Rose said the staking the goats out is dangerous is if a dog or something came to attack them they could not get away. They are a easy kill.
