Ah, but horses .. and goats.. convert FIBER to energy. In our bodies fiber just passes through, aiding in digestion, but not being absorbed. Herbivores turn the fiber into energy in their body, turn it into fat.

I've never fed it to goats, but I had an old, broken-mouthed horse, and I fed him beet pulp, as much as he would eat, as a replacement for the hay he couldn't chew. Along with equine senior feed to make sure his vitamins, minerals, ect. were balanced.

If I had a skinny goat, I might gradually replace half of her hay, pound for pound dry weight, with beet pulp for a month and see how it goes. Making sure to have free-choice minerals available. My gelding was about 500# underweight when I got him, and I swear you could *see* him gaining weight while you watched.

I became the owner of a very underweight, pregnant saanen doe Nov 1st. Starting adding beet pulp - the shredded version - to her concentrate feed aprox. Nov 15th. Got better hay. Wormed her. Fed her lots of good stuff. She looks pretty good now! Cannot say what did the trick but sure glad something did.

proportion: 1 part alfalfa pellets, 1 part beet pulp, 1 part grain, 1/5 part black sunflower seed.
