i have gotten a few of these calls now, and now i just hang up if i hear "telephone relay" and assume it is a scammer. Question for the deaf people on here... What is one quick question I could ask the person on relay that would separate the "sheep from the goats" so to speak?

Deafgoatlady I thought of you and wondered what your respnse would be! I would be furious as all get out too!
I have not received any of these (yet) Not everyone belongs in a spelling bee but round these parts we don't spell check as cheque.
The only somewhat fishy offer Ive had is someone called wanting all my males. He didn't know if I had 2 or 200, kept saying he had to talk to his cousin. Well cousins are OK if you have to talk to them once or twice on a deal but this went on and on for a couple of weeks. After about the third call I dropped the matter. In this case it wasnt' a scam, just somebody wanting goats for practically nothing.
But I guess the greatest tip off would be no questions about the the animals themselves!
An extra $50 to reserve KMiller??? TOO funny!!

Yes, he 'almost' had me until I read that part. Might as well have wrote, "P.S. - By the way, I'm a scammer - and a very bad one at that!"

Onthespot,

That's a bit of a difficult question. Probably ask to email you which is what I tend to do and if that doesn't work, I try to get my mother in law to make a phone call for me. Relay has worked for me quite a lot in the past and don't need to see any reason to ask my mother in law to order a pizza or place an order for me anytime soon!

I never take cheques anymore. Too risky. They pay you with a bad cheque and by the time you find out, just try to get your goat back, right? I always make sure I mention that in the email with people, not just put it in the ad, then there's no excuse for them not knowing. It's amazing how much people don't really read the ad fully. They'll ask what sex the goat is, if it has horns, etc, even though it's posted in the ad.

I figure if you can write a cheque, that means you have money in your account, so you can just withdraw that first instead and bring it to pay for your goat. Or I can direct you to the nearest bank machine if you "forget". With a big order like a horse, there are things called certified cheques and I will take those also.

Although I have paid with cheques myself. Some people don't mind, but I will pay cash if they prefer.

I will let *SOME* people pay with cheques and that would be people I know well. We have paid with cheque before and they diddn't care.

The only way I will take a cheque is to take it and cash it, then they get their animal. But if they really wanted the animal that day I would be happy to point them to the nearest bank!

We prefer to pay with checks so we have a record of it later.
However, I have paid cash more than once...lol
So far, I have not had experiences with bad checks....I also haven't dealt with many people either...lol
I usually request cash from first time buyers and those coming from further away and usually that is what people want to pay with.

Our preacher just lost $3000 in a scam....he had his truck for sale, of course, they needed money returned for the overpayment of the check they sent ! He has a good heart and is gullible. Will be a hard pill to swallow, and a lesson learned forever.

Don't take certified checks. They are not safe anymore.

My DH *almost* got taken in by a scammer who wanted to pay with a certified check. DH is the suspicious sort, though, and called the bank that supposedly issued it. Turned out that it was a VERY good forgery.

It seems there are a LOT of scams now involving certified checks. Since the law is that if a certified check is deposited, the bank HAS to release the funds within 5 business days, the scammer can give you a check, wait the five days until the bank releases it, you give them the goods and in 2 to 3 weeks when it is discovered to be a forgery(after bouncing back and forth between the banks), you are stuck holding the bill.

Take cash, take PayPal....but don't take anything else.

Peace,
Caliann

Alex, paypal.com you set up an account. Most breeders including myself only pay for goats with checks, it's a business farm account. I take lots of payments, goats and soap off paypal, its connected to my bank so I can withdraw the money from paypal into my account or I can hold it in paypal. I like keeping deposits for goats in my paypal account because I will be doing taxes before the goats are born and leaving for their new homes. So I would be stating the deposits are income, when in fact they aren't yet, can't spend deposits because you have to give so much back each year on unborn bucklings or doelings, or milkers you end up wanting to keep to show or milk. Plus the following year there really isn't a place to put 'refunds of deposits' on your schedule F. Each year my tax gal tells me to come up with a better way of doing it. There isn't, except paypal. The governement of course hates paypal, it's really a giant slush fund, where I can get money from you, then use it to buy something from someone else or another business without paying taxes. Vicki

Are there any humans left alive in North America that aren't familiar with this scam??? or variations on this scam???

Heck, even for internet nubes or phobes, they have tv commercials, for heaven's sake!

I think we all have to be wary nowadays... if someone wants to buy something from me, it'll be cash (and if I don't know em personally, I will inspect the bills)... if they want to pay with checks, we'll drive over to THEIR bank, they can cash the check there, and I'll take the cash in my hand.

These scum suckin' devils have to try variations, to get through our armor... pretty low dragging the deaf into the equation.

You bet it's low. My advice to anyone that gets a phone call like this, just tell them to email any and all questions. If they found you on the net, they will very likely have your email address. You should be able to sort 'em out pretty fast then.

thank you! Can you believe there are teens that don't know what PayPal is! I knew you can pay with it, but not transfer it into a bank account! I thought it was like net money! Spend it on the internet to get stuff. Still can't believe how stupid I am!!
