Cows are almost never x-rayed for hardware. Portable x-ray machines are not powerful enough to penetrate to the first stomach, where the nail/wire is usually located. A cow would need to be transported to a large animal x-ray faclity and partly sedated. Since hardware is diagnosed by signs and metal detectors, xrays don't even come into it.
The nail/wire is usually in the first stomach, and if it travels out, it can puncture the heart. It would have to go through all the other stomachs and assorted organs to get back to the intestines.
