I do not have goats yet, but I have used electric chargers for other animals for years.

THEY ARE ALWAYS OVERRATED! If you want a fence charger that will really work in all situations get the highest rated one you can afford.... anything says its a "20 mile" or a "40 mile" fence charger will usually turn out to be a joke, and you have spent your money for nothing. The important thing is the "joule (amount of energy) rating". Forget the "miles of fencing rating" it usually does not mean much and is very much a subjective advertising rating. A/C chargers are by far the best. You can put one in your barn and tie an overhead wire to trees, or run it along the top of the corral to get it to the place you need it. Figure on spending $180 or more....Don't do like I did and buy a $75 one, then a $125 dollar one and then finally spending what I should have in the first place.

Like one of the others said, correct grounding is supper important. That may be a challenge in places like southern Missouri where there is lots of rock. One can extend a ground wire along the fence to a place where there is deeper soil or a continuously damp place if necessary.

But the most important thing, is to spend the money on a high-joule charger in the first place, especially if you live in an area that has dry soils some of the year. In the Pacific Northwest or similar area, one could likely get by with one of the smaller ones. Since you have an existing woven wire fence, besides attaching the ground wire to the ground rods, attache it to the woven wire fence also.

Edited to add: That $185 price was about 8 years ago... suspect a good one now will cost $250 or more.

I understand why folks go with solar, but I honestly think they are WAY over priced. YEESH! $400 for a good one, then ya gotta buy the darn battery. I think I'll take an A/C and run the chance that the power might go out... I guess I'll just have to pull everyone into the barn! Heh. Ok, I know all situations are different. I just get really annoyed at the outrageous price of things now days. I am getting ready to put up some fencing. I plan on just one strand in the middle to keep the goats from climbing on the real fence.

I think a good solution is to get a solar pannel and charge a battery. An inverter might be necessary.

My charger cost $269 and well worth every penny since the goats haven't escaped since I purchased it. Peace of mind is awesome!! It has a one year warranty and you can purchase an extended warranty if you want. My warranty ran out and I lost a charger to lightening. I was going to replace it with a new one, but they said to send it in for repairs.....the repairs and shipping combined only cost me $30. I was a happy camper.
By the way, I am STILL using this charger and still love it!!
