So sorry you and your wee one are experiencing this Ruth. I have to agree with Gailann..it sounds like contagious ecthyma..Orf, soure, mouth, Postular Dermatitis. The rash developing makes it sound even more like it.

I have read some on this..they say if you are in goats and/or sheep long enough..you will experience this. I believe alot of times people have it in their herd..but it is so mild of a case they don't catch it. Later..a kid gets it and it is a severe case and kind of takes people off guard.

If it is this..they say she needs to be on microbials for a while. And an old medicine for it is called Gentian Violet. Its used as a topical. I am guessing not for the inside of the mouth.

This stuff can and will live at room temperature for 15 yrs. It can also be alive in the dead scabs that fall off on the ground. AND it is very contagious. So IF you even think this is what that sweetie has .. Ruth..wear gloves..cause we don't want you comin' down with it!

Much good luck..oh..and ya know I think Gailann is right, I used/use L-Lysine for me with shingles...so I would not be above giving some to a goat with this.

That's what I told the vet, but he doesn't think it looks like Orf.

GOOD NEWS UPDATE:

She's standing up and making goat noises.

My vet doesn't have overnight facilities so I'm picking her up for the night and I'll take her back in the morning for another all day treatment.

That's wonderful news! I was becoming afraid to open this thread in case it was not good news.

I hope she keeps up the good progress.

Took her back this morning for another all day session.
She actually had a little bounce in her step once or twice last night. She still won't nurse, so I had to tube feed her again. I slept on the couch all night cuddling her. DH got the whole bed to himself...and two dogs.

Well, I have to say, I'm so impressed with my vet. He literally brought her back from the brink of death. I'm going to send a basket of something over there today!

That is WONDERFUL Ruth, Prayers, that she will continue to improve. Isn't it great ot have a good vet, when so many of them are jerks, and don't know a goat from a rabbit.

Yeah, isn't she somthing?????? I can't wait until she's old enough to breed. Her extremely tough and hardy kids should be worth a fortune!

Yahoo!!!!!

Except for the tube feeding because of her mouth hurting, she's just gotten the okay to go home! I'll be picking her up again after work .... what a trooper.

I sent the vet's office a big basket of cookies, tea and coffee. It'll get there this afternoon sometime. They sure deserve it.

I do have a good vet. There are four of them there. They are a dog and cat hospital, but they do livestock on the farm. Usually, babies are brought in if possible. Yesterday, when I went to pick her up, there was a litter of pigs in the office. One of the vets has goats of his own, so they keep up on them pretty well. I love those guys/gals (2 male 2 female vets)! If I could have them cloned............I'd offer all of you one, no charge!
