What is NAIS? I just have goats for brush and pets and do not show and etc. When I google NAIS I get far too many hits.
What is it and why it is so bad/good?

NAIS or the NAIzS is the governments unrealistic plan to keep watch over every single Livestock in the US so that in case of Mad cow, bird flu, terrorist they can pinpoint quickly the outbreak area. I'm totally against it, and do write my Senators, distribute flyers, and don't see how they expect it to work. But I do follow the Law as it's written, and will Abide by my Organizations decisions. I won't however Tag my goats ears, so If you order a kid from me from a Tagging State. I won't sell. Not that they don't do this in other countries, but this is America. I feel it's against our constitutional rights. "Taggation" without intelligent representation. I've read how it's lead to the decline in other countries small farms, how can this not raise our food dollar? Good thing we raise most of our own! National animal Identification system I believe.

And another point of view....We have to have some form of tracking from birth to table to be able to safeguard our food supply, not only in this country but from other countries. Knowing the tracking of that downer cow with whatever diesease not only protects us by knowing exactly where she came from, but also protects other farmers who are not quranteened or percentage slaughtered for testing because they can prove she was not communicable via tracking.

And I want some form of NAIS so my export channels will open back up. Right now all meat to China is only very specific parts of the meat, not only because of testing but because of tracking. Forget my North and South America sales, which are zero right now with the border closed.

But like the work I did with the scrapie program so we could use tattoos and microchips instead of ear tags in our goats, I am doing the same with NAIS, a workable program is all I want in the end. Vicki

I agree 100% with Vicki! The ear tags on goat do not work. They tear them out way to easy. We do need some form of tracking sick animals. If we ever want the borders to open back up with China, S. America etc we need some sort of system to track these animals. I just don't want the govt. to go to such extremes as they were wanting to. Just having everyone register their premise and have to give that # when selling at a salebarn, etc would be enough.

Yes, to Tattoo's; micro chips {{shudder}} >sounds like big brother? I agree with all of what you're saying Vickie, but IMO It will take them forever to track down any taintings, so this to me is a hollow protection. It took them How long to track down the Peanut butter salamenella? and My Nephew was one of those unlucky 5 yr olds who landed in the hospital on I.V's for 3 days, with salamenella, untracable until the recall. Recently in Mich they found a warehouse chok full of mislabeled Goose innards from China.
bird flu anyone?

But hey if it opens back up our overseas meat markets that is a good thing.
I also want a workable program : ) If we have to have one blech!
