I bump our does all the time before they deliver and never had any problems. It just takes a gentle touch if you know what your looking for. Bumping only after the deliver is like shutting the barn door after the horse is out. If Im concerned that the doe may have another kid inside or if she seems to be having problems I glove up and go in and check.

Blossomgapfarm: I have been thinking of you and your doe. How is she? I hope all works out well for her, it is so hard to wait five months and then lose the babies. Too disappointing for everyone including the doe. Sending good thoughts and well wishes your way.

Thank you all for your well wishes. The doe (Pixie) is acting fine now. She was wanting a bit more attention yesterday so I petted on her quite a while. She is eating normal, no temp or signs of illness, for which I am grateful. I am giving her penicillin and will for at least 5 days and probably 10. My other 2 does are bred to the same buck but I believe they are much farther along than Pixie was. In fact one of them looks like she could go any day.

I know that theses things just happen sometime, despite the best of care. I do look forward to seeing her kids next year. I thought about trying to breed her back in a few weeks if she comes back in but am not sure I want summer babies in Louisiana!

i know how it feels to wait that long and then NOT get a baby. i had a doe who was too weak when she was a yearling to breed her, so i waited another year. she had her baby on her due date, and he was a strong, handsome buck. she was such a good mother and very happy but what we didn't know, was that he couldn't get the milk out, and my in all my stupidness, i didn't squirt any out first. well, about three days after he was born, he ended up dieing. it wasn't as sad to see the baby go as it was to see my doe moan and cry for him. ugh, it makes me want to cry just thinking about it. she had waited so long, and when she finally had him, he died! so this year we are going to be a little more smart and hopefully she will have another beautiful baby, or maybe two beautiful babies. i am glad to hear your doe is doing well Dawn! it is so nice when you DON'T have any ill goats, and when you see one recover so well!

Glad she is doing better. I know what you mean about summer babies! I had some last summer..it was rough. I have five doelings that I would like to breed now, but I think I will wait and breed them the first part of the summer and have winter babies!
