Definitely agree with Idahoe's original post.
I would add two things:
First, go with a breeder you trust. Don't be afraid to spend a little more money up front, because the purchase price of the goat is just the beginning of the expense.
Feeding a goat that gives 1/2 gallon a day costs the same as a goat that gives a gallon and a half a day. Same worming, same feet trimming. Get a healthy goat(s)
with some breeding behind it.
If you hook up with a good breeder, you also get someone you can talk to if you have a crisis (truly priceless), ask management questions, and probably end up with a new friend.

Plus the kids will be worth more!
The other thing I just HAVE to say, is Saanens are wonderful. They were our first goats and we haven't switched. Quiet, gentle, sweet, with lots of milk and a strong will to milk. Pick a goat you like, but make sure it comes from a well managed herd.
