Uh, yeah, they'll probably 'show' tonight :-) 17 degrees, will feel like 14?? LOL. I hope she waits until a bit later towards the weekend...

I'll trade the boot sucking mud for ice until I start slipping and falling rear first on that for sure!

Good luck Christie!!! You'll do great!

Best of luck, christi! Here's my favorite pic I have taken so far of mom and young one. Took it a few years back. Nothing special breed-wise, I just like the proudness that shows on her face!

looks like we will have our first goats born anytime now! - Goats

UNDER EDIT: Reading jill's post about timeline made me smile. The goat in the pic above, I didn't even know she was pregnant. She didn't show much in winter coat, out there running with the herd. Then, BAM! Here's a kid! I had another one, I knew she was going to give birth soon but she had shown zero signs it was imminent. She was standing with the herd eating grass, picked up her head, and PLOP, out squirted a kid. She looked back at it, then matter of factly started cleaning it up. Ten minutes later, she was eating again and the kid was suckling. I like that kind!

Wow Jim, if Miracle is like that I will probably miss in the night! But you do make me feel better about Cassie she doesn't look nearly as PG as Miracle did this time last month! Cute pic, they do look proud!
Well..... at feeding there was some goop/straw hanging (I was a little anal and helped her clean it!) and she seem to still have discharge by the time I finished chores (find an egg in with the goats - crazy hens!). And she seemed a little more perky with the feed. I'm going back out at ten so we will see what has happened in two hours!
Start thinking does for me! =)

NO!!! I think she is enjoying keeping me up at night! I have her by herself today b/c of the wind in case they/she decides that it is time. I guess the kid(s) like the womb?!

eek ackk ook...dern doe!

A friend of mine forwarded me the Doe's code of honor - one day I'll find it, but it certainly applies to your doe!

I have gotten to the point if they're not a first time mom, I find IGNORING HER is the best option :-p You'll hear it if they are in trouble..

I wonder what is the longest length of time the kids have stayed in the womb vs joining the real world were they will be worshiped -- they must of not heard about that yet.

Christie, your not alone.....I *hate* waiting on the first kids of the year. I don't get too nervous anymore, I just get impatient to see BABIES!!! Big Mama is due today and looking just like she did last week......
Cherry is due on Sunday and Tootsie I don't have a due date on but it looks like sooner than later. She looks like swallowed half a dozen beach balls.......The weather is supposed to get cold and nasty. Rain, Ice, Snow and wind........
How is she today, Christie??

computerchick says: I find IGNORING HER is the best option

;-) I prefer to ignore them, being lazy! When you raise a herd of meat goats, you don't get to do individual attention like you do with dairy stock. I completely agree, you will know from just your regular casual observations if it isn't going right.

Also, like most animals, goats can, within a certain window, time their births. Not saying they can stretch out a mid-February birthdate into March, but they can delay for hours or maybe a day or two if needed. I think that ability comes from being game for predators, which of course is where they got their fecundity, as well.

In my meat herd, the ones who uneventfully drop kids, clean them up and go on about their biz like it's just another day are the darlings of my heart. If I have to help them or they trend to being poor mothers and produce bottle babies, they gotta go. That way, I select year after year for easy kidding and easy farming. To my way of thinking, it is always the well-being of the herd over the individual. I do not want to retain goats that detract from the well-being of the herd, or have traits that will drag down the herd. Bottle babies are a drag on my operation and result in a net loss of money that the rest of the herd then has to make up. Same with stillborns, weak kids, comformation defects and nannies who are hard kidders.

That may sound harsh, but in nature those goats would all be culled by predators and the herd would naturally be improved by those pressures. On the farm, I fill that role by culling. It's hard sometimes, but it has to be done.

Well, last night I thought for sure it was going to happen -- lots of pawing, making noises I hadn't heard, getting up and down, when she laid down every few minutes you would see her tail flutter and she moved her leg.... then at midnight when I checked she was just like the night before. (Ohh and really heavy breathing like the night before - I have yet to see her do that during the day.) Which I guess is good b/c Syd has a stomach bug so I was up with her off and on during the night and too tired to check until around and of course NOTHING!
The rain has started here but the tempature hasn't dropped yet. Syd's at the sitter so I am sure it won't being happening in the next few hours! =)
I guess I am impatient to see the babies and because it's our first arrivals and I am afraid I will miss it!
I have looked at Fias Farm's info - but I was wondering does the boer's tail do the same as a diary breed? Miracle's tail has always stood up right - nothing like Cassie's...

Jim -- I don't think what you say is harsh at all - your right predators would do the culling! We are just starting out and this is our first arrival so I'm a little giddy about the first one's. I'm sure when it's Cassie's turn in a month I won't (hopefully) be so fretful about missing it.

A little ice on trees but I think South of STL were we are is so far lucking out! Still no kids - I guess she's trying to hit that 155 day mark. I noticed she is not as "soft" as she was earlier in the week.

Yeah, my girls are still holding out on me too. Big Mama was due yesterday and Cherry is due tomorrow. Tootsie has no due date but she is due any minute. All three are waddling and groaning and singing and gooping...but no kids. I'm hoping they'll hang in there till Monday...supposed to be clearing off then. Its still just above freezing and pouring outside....can we say MUD?!!
Glad your not getting all that ice!!

Yeah.....<sigh>

I just did my final check of the does before bed. This is what greeted me.

looks like we will have our first goats born anytime now! - Goats

Here are my heavily pregnant ladies.

Cherry against the far wall is due tomorrow. Big Mama is the older white Saanan/Boer, she was due yesterday. And against the other wall is Tootsie, due sometime in this coming week I believe.

Tootsie always sits on her butt like a dog when she gets close to kidding. I think it keeps some of the weight off her lungs instead of laying down.
