Thats great, they are much bigger and clearer there, thanks! It really does look like bottle jaw, though I have had a spider bite that looked like that too. If his eyelids are pale as well as the swollen face....I'd bet on worms being the culprit.
Boy, we sure know how to fill up a thread with posts fast, huh??

Thanks!! I don't get it either and yes, I was noticing what a hot topic this "appears" to be from the thread list...hehehehe. I guess I'll just post the link from now on since I know that works!! Good grief...what a deal. OK, I'll go out and deworm him in the morning and hopefully that will take care of it. I'll look for the red cell. Thanks so much for all your help!!

BottleJaw is caused from liver flukes, which can only be dewormed with Ivomec Plus. You need to get some iron in him too. Some feed stores sell iron but if not you can get some from your local grocery store, the kind for people. I have a doe going through this right now. I also give plenty of B12 shots, plus probios. Hope this helps.

I do not think it is just caused by liver flukes. Its caused by anemia which in turn is caused by bloodsucking worms. Cydectin works very well for getting rid of the worms that are causing bottle jaw. Ivomec no longer works here......

I am sorry, maybe you miss understood me. It is not the Ivomec plain, it is the Ivomec Plus that will kill liver flukes and is safe in pregnancy. This is what I am using, as I have doe with Bottle Jaw right now. I understand that safeguard and plain Ivomec are resistant in some states. It is used very frequently. Also, the anemia comes from the worm overload. This was taken from goat connection "A swelling (edema) under the jaw on a goat could indicate a severe parasite load. The edema results from hypoproteinemia, which happens when blood and plasma loss has resulted. This can be caused by severe nematode infestations in the gastrointestinal tract (and with liver failure resulting from liver fluke infestations)." The wormer Cydectin:Treatment & Control of: Lungworms, gastrointestinal roundworms, larvae, lice, mange mites & cattle grubs. Extrenal parasites. Unfortunately, the ones that control Liver Flukes are: Ivomec Plus kills all stages, and then Valbazen and safeguard and pancur only kill the adult Liver Flukes not the other stages. I got this information from
http://fiascofarm.com/goats/wormers.htm
This site has alot of good information on worms and wormers. I hope this helps you some and I also hope your goat gets better Milk n' Honey.

Yes, it is caused by worms *and/or* Liver Flukes. Since Ivomec in any form doesn't work here, *if* I had a doe with liver flukes and worms, I guess I would have to use Ivomec Plus *and* Cydectin. One to get the flukes and one to get the worms. I have dealt with bottle jaw, but it was the type caused by worms, since the Cydectin has always cleared it up. We have never had liver flukes.

The bottle jaw we dealt with this year cleared up initally with Ivomec and Panecur (they had reoccurances, except in one case where she didn't relapse), but then I moved to Cydectin and that cleared it up much better. So the bottle jaw seen here (and in one case the swelling went from her leg up her throat and up to her eye sockets) did not require the wormer for flukes. So it isn't a given that flukes are the cause.
We lost one doe out of the 8 cases we had (two of those were does who had to be treated twice). The one I mentioned above was the one we lost.
Lots of iron supplement. I used three different iron supplements at some point during the treatments (people type, injectable pig iron, then red cell most recently). I also injected Vit B-Com, Vits A&D as well.
We did a series of wormings with Cydectin on the entire herd. I brought in too many outside goats and it disrupted things....
First year for bottle jaw here and we've had goats for a decade now (never wormed for the first four years).
