Newtogoats...you didn't say of you had wormed her or any of your goats? Please search the posts on this forum about worming, and what wormers to use. I think it may be possible that your vet did not even do the fecal you brought him, he sounds like a real putz.

All goats will need some worming at pretty regular intervals. There is no such thing as a worm-free goat, but the worm loads should be kept at reasonable levels. The fact that your doe is responding to the blackstrap molasses, which is high in iron, could indicate she is suffering from anemia from a heavy worm load. Can you find a good vet in your area? If you let us know where you live, maybe someone on this board knows of a good vet in you vicinity.

You need to have GOOD fecals done, and to worm not just this goat but your entire herd.

Sounds like you really care about your animals. You'll do good. I'm a newbie too, but this forum has given me a great education, besides my own reading and info from local goatkeepers.

You came to a good place for info.

Another very good forum where a lot of us here post questions and share about our animals is dairygoatsplus.com.

Blessings, Jill!

Thanks Jill! The vet said that he checked for worms and there weren't any but I no longer trust what he told us so I think we will definitely worm her and all the others. We have 7 goats including Camilla and her two babies. We haven't wormed any of them since we got them about 3-4 mos ago so I'm sure it's high time. How often should you worm a goat?? My husband mentioned that there are different medications for different worms, how do I know what to give them??

You really should have fecals done before worming. A lot of people don't, though.
One thing: every doe should be wormed immediately after giving birth!

Find out from local goat keepers what works in your area, as some wormers lose effectiveness from being overused.

I alternate Ivermectin with Cydectin. I use the Ivermectin horse paste orally---just put a small dab on a piece of bread and give it to the goat. The Cydectin---use cattle pour-on in a needle-less syringe. Insert it into the goat's mouth by opening the mouth behind the gap in the teeth and quickly squirting the liquid into the back of the mouth. Hold the goat's mouth closed then with the head help up and stroke the throat to get it to swallow.
There is another recent thread on the dosages of Cydectin, just do a search on this forum. Some people use Safeguard, especially on young kids. It may be necessary to reworm for some parasites in 21 days to get the life cycle broken. Keeping the pens and stalls clean helps, as does rotational grazing, if you have the room for a few pastures.

If I've given any wrong info here due to my own relative inexperience, I am sure one of the more experienced members of the board will step in and correct it!

Check her teeth. If she has something stuck between the teeth - back teeth - it may hurt to eat. I had a horse that developed a sharp ridge and quit eating. Good luck !!
