As a general statement I would always go with whole cow's milk over replacers. Although replacers can and have worked for some, I can tell you in many cases they resulted in what you went through. I can also say I have never had a problem with cow's milk. So glad your kids are on the road back.

For bottle babies, I have always used whole cows milk with a pint of heavy cream (whipping cream) added per gallon (for added fat). I don't use buttermilk but add Kefir or plain yogurt to the milk for the probiotic organisms. This has always worked for me. If you are concerned there aren't enough nutrients, you can always give a little liquid baby vitamins, but I have never used added vitamins and the kids did great on this recipe!
