New to Texas
Hey ya'll! Originally from Florida but lived I the suburbs of Chicago, IL for a chunk of my life. There I met my wonderful boyfriend. We have always loved animals and a more natural way of life. We knew Illinois wasn't the place for us so we took an opportunity to volunteer on a hobby farm in northern Washington near the canadian border. There we worked with cattle, horses, mules, chickens, ducks, and katahdin sheep. We were lucky enough to be there during the lambing season!
From there we moved on to another opportunity in Cat Springs, Texas on a 500+ acre ranch. There we worked with horses, cattle, bison, ducks, pigs, peacocks (my sworn enemy...), alpaca, goats, a coatimundi, and LOTS of dogs.
Now that we are done volunteering, we have taken residence in Dallas with my boyfriend's aunts in their house. We are hitting up the job market and after we will be looking for a place of our own. We would prefer to rent a house that would allow us to have a few chickens and maybe a little dairy goat but finding rental houses has not been easy and most are not even fenced in. So if anyone around the area knows of anything, please let us know! Something in the $700 range would be acceptable, even if it is a bit out of the DFW area.
A bit about us!
Me: I will be 25 in August. I was going to school for veterinary medicine but it became too impractical financially. I have worked and volunteered at animal hospitals as well as volunteered at animal rescues and rehabilitating various animals.
The boyfriend: 27 years young. A US Army combat veteran. He was a calvary scout. He went to school for zoology.
Our hope is to one day own a house with 5+ acres. I jave many of the breeds of animals that I want picked out. I am a HUGE researcher! I have even researched extensively on creating a new pig breed!

Welcome to Texas as well as this board. I can't help you with rentals, but wish you the best in your endeavours. I hope you become a regular contributor here.

Gonna be hard to find rental for $700 in DFW area. I'm south of there and rentals are more like $1200 to $1500 for a house in town. If you go further south, prices are cheaper, but the job market just isn't there, Look in places like Hill, Johnson County. That's an hour from where you are but the rents are cheaper. In Ellis county, it is cheaper to buy than to rent.

Welcome to the board. If you ever consider moving a little southeast of Dallas, the City of Lufkin is looking for a zookeeper.

@whiterock Thank you for the information! Always useful to get the inside scoop. My boyfriend's aunt says her friend in Granbury is looking to rent their house on the lake. It was either $700 or $800. I can't recall. It is a bit far though because most of the drive towards Dallas is all highway and traffic gets bad quick. It sounds like we will have to look into apartments instead.
@LaDena Thank you for the heads up! Unfortunately it is near impossible to get zoo jobs without knowing someone. Actually that tends to be the case for majority of animal jobs. It's really sad because both of us are so passionate about animals but it is near impossible to find a job in the field.

Land in East Tx. is fairly cheap and not the arid climate that you would find in West Tx., lot of piny woods. Employment situation isn't that great but might be worth a look see.
Welcome to Tx.

Welcome to the forum. Also live in very deep East Texas in fact right on the border of Texas and Louisiana. Thing are a lot slow in the piney woods, jobs more plentiful and prices much cheaper. Great for a old a older couple like the wife and I. From Longview east is pretty country worth a look. Seems as if life gets rushed the minute you hit the Tyler area.

Unless you land jobs in the DFW area, you might try searching in the Bryan/College Station area. American Classified (formerly Thrifty Nickel) is one source for both job ads and rentals.
There are a number of rental properties in the general area with trailers or manufactured houses in the 5 ac range.
TAMU has the Vet College in College Station.
Good luck

Welcome and hello!
I would stay away from looking around Rockwall county as most of that is fairly expensive.
Collin and Dallas counties are pretty much all urban.
Have you considered looking up around Greenville?
