Extended Lay-over in NJ on the way to Tennessee

Hi Everyone! My name is Chris, and about a year ago my significant other and I took our first step in moving south, going from Connecticut down to Keyport, New Jersey. This was a necessary stop-over, and the place we plan to be for the next 2 - 3 years, but we are constantly working toward our plan to move to Tennessee.

I’m so happy to have found this forum, which I came upon while searching for some composting information. We’re just starting on our homesteading journey, and I look forward to learning from so many knowledgeable and experienced people, and to sharing my experiences and lessons as well.

We started out this year with a small garden and some containers, with which we had some modest success. We plan to expand this quite a bit next year. This place isn’t our ideal homesteading location, with a yard only 60’ x 100’ which is mostly shaded by the house and the neighbors’ trees, but we’re determined to make the most of it until we move.

All the best,
Chris

Chris you'll love Tn ,I do . and with super low property taxes ,low car insurance rates, no state car inspections ,no state income tax , and beautiful areas you'll wonder why you ever waited to get here ! I have family in North Jersey and their property taxes just went up $60,000.00 a year ! I just bought a 5 acre parcel here and the taxes pre build are $62.00 a year and won't be more than $600.00 when the new owner builds .And home owner policies are about $700.00 a year . You get all 4 seasons and their all nice and last 3 months .

Thanks Grumpy Old Man. We're really looking forward to moving, and we would both jump at it in a second if we didn't have some things holding us here for a while. Of course, the reasons you mention are most of the reasons we decided on Tennessee. The price and availability of land were also part, and it doesn't hurt that Donna's mother was born there, and she still has extended family in the area.

Welcome. What part of NJ is your stop over?

Matt

I'm in Keyport, which is on the Raritan Bay in Monmouth County. That's the one thing I'm going to miss when we move - I'm less than a mile from the bay.

I've never been out tuna fishing Matt. My father went once with some friends and they all brought home some nice steaks. Maybe I'll give that a shot next season.

Blue fish/snapper is one of my favorites. Getting close to the end of their season here, but flounder season is approaching quickly. Makes me want to blow off my "honey do" list this weekend.

Years ago, I went fishing at Corson's Inlet in NJ. I thought I caught a flounder, but it was just a fluke.
