Hello from Brazil

Hi from Natal, Brazil! We have 7.5 acres (3 hectares) of mostly coconut trees, just a few miles from the tourist city near us. I've been in this country for 37 years, but was originally from southern Oregon.

Our mostly-family-team does video production (lightinaction.org, abeprod.com.br), but since I'm almost 63 and slowing down a bit, I'm helping lots with grandkiddies now (6 with us here, with 1 more on the way) and trying to produce a few things to help keep expenses down.

We bought this place 5 yrs ago with a milk cow, a few short-haired sheep and the usual bunch of chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and fruit trees, but have down-sized the animals to just a few rabbits and chickens for our own consumption.

I'm here mostly to learn from the experience of others and try to avoid a few problems along the way. I'll be popping in every once in a while to look for info and maybe answer a question or two.

Thanks for the good forum!

But I just about died when we got off the plane in Portland and it was 22F! Going from 74F-84F year round here in Natal, to 22F is like stepping barefoot in your birthday suit into a snowbank below Mt Hood in early Feb......I couldn't find a warm enough spot and put on enough layers to keep from shivering...

Pois é, depois de 37 anos, sou mais brasileiro do que americano...

I'll be going through João Pessoa tomorrow, on my way to the interior of Pernambuco.

Natal is nice in many ways, especially if you live outside the city a ways..

Faz quase trinta anos depuis eu falei portugues e agoura meu portugues es mais espanol..... but I had the time of my life living there. I loved the nordeste! You were there when I was there. Who knows? Perhaps we passed paths at some point. Have an acaraje and a couple argulu (needle fish?) for me! I still dream of that delicious street food.

Sarmour, any chance you could help me try to find my host family? I have their old address and am clueless about how to try and locate them anymore. I would love to catch up with them again! Tanto saudades...

I'm just west of Portland. It is beautiful here. I lived in Hawaii for a couple of years and know what you mean about the temperature shock when you come back.

Doesn't hurt to try! Send me your info via a private email (if you have trouble let me know and we'll do it another way) and I'll see what I can do.

Most people here are connected to the net too, so there should be some trace of them. Who knows, a fairly quick search might get some results?
