Our water is grey this morning

Our well water is grey this morning. I first noticed it in the toilet and then when running water from the faucet. We had about 5 inches of rain last night so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. Am I getting seepage? What do I do about it?
Can anybody help?

Jen

Sounds like seepage to me. You need to contact the person that drilled your well and get them out to fix it.

Put some of the water in a container and see if there are fine dust like pieces of stone in the water that will settle to the bottom. If so, it should clear. Is you well in a location to where surface water can accumulate around the casing?

That is a fair guess.

What kind of well do you have, deep, steel or plastic 5" casing, is it in a spot where water gathers, is the casing up to the surface, or do you have a well pit? Etc.

Thanks for your replies! Don't know who drilled the well. It's probably been there for many, many years. We just bought the place last fall. Anyway...pretty sure it's a pit...don't know what kind of casing. Water doesn't accumulate around that area. I've got a call in to the environmental services agent at the county office to see if he's got any ideas. Also thinking now that it could possibly be the water softner acting up. Getting somebody to come and look at that too. We are clueless so need all the help we can get!!!

Fill a glass and let it sit for a few minutes, then for a half hour. See whether it changes. Does it clear? Is there anything settling out? Does the colour rise towards the top, then clear (air bubbles)?
