land for the king?

.

[Milford Connecticut] 7/12/2005
From the Connecticut Post:

City officials, sounding at times like the Sons of Liberty in 1775, unanimously approved an ordinance that prevents the city from using its eminent domain power to take owner-occupied housing for private economic development projects.

It was Alderman Thomas Beirne, invoking the spirit of the Revolutionary War patriots, who got in the last word. The alderman said.... "In Lexington, Mass., in 1775 we had British soldiers in red coats claiming land for the king, now we have judges in black robes doing it, but it's still a fight over property rights."

What a great idea! Maybe we should contact our own local officials and suggest they do the same!

Cheryl - there is a state legislator from Union Center, SD named Larry Rhoden. This legislator is working on a bill to introduce at the next legislative session to do the same thing as CT. He is working on spelling out what eminent domain power can and can not do. If you support him, let him know!

Nice step in the right direction...but he only specified owner-occupied?? What about the land you own, but haven't gotten the money together to build on yet? That dream homestead that you plan to move out to next year, or the year after. Looks like it's still at risk!

Of course I would need clarification, but I took this to mean, basically that if you own a set of apartments or retail shops etc. I would be suprised if he means you can take a farmers field that he owns and doesn't have a house on.
