We hav a woodmizer and love it. You will find many brands out there and their prices vary as much as their features. If you go to http://woodweb.com/ you will find a list of companies. Each company for the most part is very eager to sell you a saw and will send you a dvd or video so you can see their product in action. Also there are various wood shows around this time of year where you can see them demonstratedlive. Some comapnies publish a list of their owners, too, so you can visit someone close to you for their comments.

sawmills

We have a Peterson Saw mill and love that. It really does an accurate job. They have a website if you want to look at it.

I don't, but know Robert Hardy (the ones who hold the 4th of July homesteading event). He not only paid off all of their outstanding debts using one, but has done so well he purchased a second one. Watched him use one last weekend. Very, very efficient.

My brother has been using a Wood Mizer mill since 1999 and has had very good luck with it. He opted to make his unit stationary rather than keeping it on wheels. There's been no shortage of logs/business, since he started this "part time" hobby. People just keep bringing him trees, and he either saws on "halves" or charges a fee, usually around $150 per thousand board feet if the customer helps by off-bearing. The earlier suggestion of attending some of the live demos is a very good one, because features that may be important to one sawyer would be of little value to another. There are probably a lot of good mills out there, but everyone I've known who has owned a Wood Mizer (4-5) has been satisfied with the quality of the machines. Good luck.
