Aaargh! Scary critter ID needed! Aaargh!!

Aaaargh! Went out a few minutes ago expecting peace and quiet, and saw this running away from the front porch!! First, is it a tarantula? And second, will it kill me?

It was huge, a good 5 inches long. AAARGH!!

Don't know my spiders all that well CG but I'd call that some type of tarantula. Most aren't deadly to humans.

And darn you for pushing my scary critter ID post down right after I posted it. :haha:

Yes it's a tarantula
No it won't kill you unless you're somehow alergic...

They are very dosile (sp) They'll just keep on walking.
The bite is supose to be like a wasp sting...

Wpw! Thanks Lex and CC for posting some cool pictures of cool critters! Very nice. My boys had a female tarantula for many years and loved it when she shed her skin. They named HER, Jack Web. Go figure! LOL Th Males have a much shorter life span.

I hope more people post neat pictures from places I've never been, like anywhere East of the Rockies.

What the heck do you do with the fangs? They migrate right through our property. Had to have DH take one off our unmade bed one time, that was a little to close. DH mostly makes the bed, now...ha

Me thinks Fangs is the tarantula's name...correct me if I'm wrong. Now, I'm not the least bit afraid of spiders but that little chit would have my heart a thumpin'!! Good thing they've not made it up this far yet!

Well, methinks I watched LOTR - Two Towers a few too many times. I about fainted when I saw it and I'm still a little nauseaus.

I have this feeling the little darling's fixing to have little ones. I mean, just a suspicion.

In contrast to Daybird's Fang, I've decided to name her Beatrice. And I now know what that funny brown thing was I saw scurrying under the place a couple of weeks ago. So she appears to be a permanent resident.

Yes, you're right. Fangs is the name of my female Chilean Rose Haired Tarantula. I use her, along with the snakes, turtles, ferrets, lizards, chinchilas, birds, etc in educational programs for children. I have no idea what kind o tarantula CG's Beatrice is, but the rose haireds have always been the nicest. Yes, they do have fangs that can bite. No, I've never been bitten, although I'm told it's no worse than a really bad bee sting. Yes, they can kick the hairs off of their abdomen in defence. No, I've never had that happen to me, although I'm told it can cause eye irriation and problems in inhaled. Yes, they spin webs with their spinnerettes.

OMG!! I do NOT like spiders, though I put up with them as a necessary evil.."Don't kill them, honey -- anything that eats mosquitos is our friend," I gently tell my son (but inside, I'm saying to the spider "Go die somewhere ugly poisonous maneating devil-spawn freak.") But if I saw such a humongous evil thang in my neck of the woods, I would have my property up for sale in a heartbeat! Thank God I live in Pacific NW where we don't have such monsters.

Several years ago while driving from Ajo (A-ho) Az to Tucson AZ I actually saw a huge herd of these crossing the desert after a rain storm. Looked like the ground was red/brown and walking! Had to stop and let my daughter study them for a bit!

Dang! I just got chill-bumps ALL over my body looking at that! Spiders are NOT supposed to need hairbrushes!

<shudder>

If I come across a standard size spider (less than 1/2") I get a little jumpy. Seeing the Tarantula of Despair looking for a date with Shelob in my backyard would reduce me to a blubbering, mindless blob of fear.

<shudder, shudder>

Five will get you ten I see a snake at The Farm next week... accompanied by a BIG spider1

Pony!

Okay, I have always hated spiders, horribly afraid of them. HOWEVER, since I have two little boys I figure I better get used to the idea, especially since this is their current fascination. Oddly enough, trying hard NOT to freak out when coming across a bug or spider has made me more tolerant of them.

But then, we're in New England, where you generally don't see bugs that big.

I'd like to think I could say "Well, it will keep the insect population down" or something if I found one of those taratulas under our porch, but I don't think I'd be that...sane about it.

But I can say...thank God for New England, where it just gets too darned cold for anything that big to live here. And Also Thank God for the Tarantula, cuz I know He's got a reason for it being there!
