Trees in Fenceline.

Hi Y'all,

I'm working at getting the fenceline around our place
cleaned out to build fence.
I've go a few nice size trees, about 6" to 10" in Diameter,
right in the fenceline.
Can I get away with just cutting them off at 6' tall, putting
Round-Up on top of the tall stump, and, then using that as
a permanent fence-post?

A couple of these trees are Honey-locust, ash, tulip poplar,
cherry, asf.
It'd save me a lot of work, cutting the tree, just to make a post
out of it.
At my age you want to save all the work you can.

John,
I realize that it will entail more work but cut the trees off at ground level then give the stumps the treatment mentioned. The tree stubs if left will not make good posts as they will rot. Using proper posts, with them in a straight line, will permit you to have an attractive fence with taut wire. Do the extra work now and in the future when it will even be more difficult to do the fencing the fence will not need to be redone! Realize you can eat an elephant one bite at a time. Just do some work each day and you will soon have the entire fence done.

Why bother with cutting it off. Clear what branches are needed to get the wires to the trunk and leave the tree alive. as long as it's alive it won't rot

I'm going to have to replace/fix my fencing here in the next year or so. In anticipation of this , I've been cutting trees to use as posts at about 4-4 1/3 feet high. I've left them alive so they wouldn't rot and fall over.
