What Is "Fodder?"
Exactly what is fodder? I'm a 'fairly' old-timer and can remember the expression 'foddering the cows,' but I can't remember just what's included in fodder. If any of you know, please tell me.

I"ve never heard that expression but I imagine it has to do with either feeding them their hay or turning beef cows out into a corn field after harvest. That's corn fodder.
It might depend on what part of the country you grew up in.
Hope that helps
Ann

Generally it is a low-energy, high fiber feed for cattle. Corn stalk bales, straws, sweet corn silage, poorer hay. Provides bulk for cattle that don't need a lot of energy (some beef, dry cows....) but need something to chew on. Can use these items to blance out a 'hot' ration of very high energy feeds.

My father and grandfather pull the leaves off corn stalks while it was green and let it dry. They called it fodder, Then they tied it up in bundles to feed the cows in the winter. By the time I came along we were mowing grass with a 2 horse mowing machine and making hay. WE didn't know what a baler was so we hauled it out of the field with a pitch fork on a wagon.

Dry cornstalks, sometimes also used as bedding if straw is in short supply.

Hello Muddah, hello Fadduh,
Here I am at Camp Grenada
Camp is very entertaining
and they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.
I went hiking with Joe Spivy
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.
All the counselors hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators
And the head coach wants no sissies
So he reads to us from something called Ulysses.
Now I don't want this should scare ya
But my bunkmate has malaria
You remember Jeffrey Hardy
They're about to organize a searching party.
Take me home, oh muddah fadduh, take me home, I hate Grenada
Don't leave me out in the forest where I might get eaten by a bear.
Take me home, I promise I will not make noise or mess the house with
other boys, oh please don't make me stay, I've been here one whole day.
Dearest fadduh, darling muddah,
How's my precious little bruddah?
Let me come home if ya miss me
I will even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.
Wait a minute, it stopped hailing,
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing,
Playing baseball, gee that's better,
Muddah Fadduh please disregard this letter.
Alan Sherman
