Give the cat a bath in warm water. Use shampoo. Flush as many fleas as you can off the cat. Then wrap it in a towel and go over it very carefully with a pair of tweezers, crushing the remaining fleas.
Repeat the flea check daily and the bath as needed.
Also, clean the house thoroughly. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Use the attachments on the vacuum to get in couch cushions etc. Change all the bedding, wash in hot water. Vacuum daily.
Feed the cat a high-quality diet. Healthy animals seem to repel parasites, whereas less healthy ones attract them.
When I fed Science Diet, I never had a flea problem.
Be careful using any kind of flea chemical on kittens.
It's also very important to get rid of fleas on kittens as they can easily become anemic and die from infestation.
