A 2x2 stick, a larger soup can, & a couple screws. Cut a small V notch in the side of the can, screw the can onto the pole, and you are good to go.
The cloth bag would not bruise the apple, & might hold more apples, but just seems so hi-tech for me.
Tho, I built mine when I was about 10.  mom used it for a decade, still sitting i the corner of the shed....
