knife making

I have wanted to get into knife making for a while but I dont know where to start. I have some knives my grandfather made but he never got a chance to teach me. I probably wouldnt have been very interested anyhow back then. If anyone is into this hobby, what are some good books, forums, basic equipment that would be helpful?

Two excellent sources of information....The Complete Bladesmith, by Jim Hrisoloas, and the 50 dollar knife shop, by Wayne Goddard. Good luck!

Do a google search for Knife Makers Guild. That might give you a good starting point about the craft.
I remember a guy at the Farmer's market that set up a table to show and sell his knife making craft. Beautiful stuff, and it's not for everyone. But if you develop the talent for it, then surely it's deserving of the intangible and tangible rewards. That guild has meets and support for the craftsmen in that field. I'de check it out.

Are you looking tomake decorative knives, or useful ones? The usefull ones can be cut from old hand saw blades, the older the better.

If you happen to live in my neck of the woods there is a man who teaches it at the local vo-tech center at the evening classes. Cost is $50 for the book and $50 for the coarse.
