Roman numerals

There is no real mystery to Roman numerals once you have the basics.

I=1
V=5
X=10
L=50
C=100
D=500
M=1000

When a lesser number appears before a greater number you subtract instead of adding. As XI=11 while IX subtracts the one leaving IX=9. You use the subtraction with ONLY one lesser number in front of the greater number. You would never write two lesser ones in front of a greater one. As an example, you would write XXX=30, never XXL for 30.

As others have shown, you simply add up all of the numbers in the chain, remembering to subtract if a lesser number appears before a greater.
