The grits and lutefisk connection.
Did ya know that both grits and lutefisk are made by soaking perfectly good foodstuffs in lye? Since most of you rebs seem to have a fondness for grits, perhaps you might wanna try some of our wonderful lutefisk. You might like it!

And lye--
And lye--is made from pouring water over wood ashes, right?
Does the food have a nice woodsy taste about it? Of course not or hominy would also taste of it.

I just looked at the ingredients on my bag of Jim Dandy grits. No lye, sorry. They are distributed by the Martha White company. I called them. No lye, sorry. I'm going to go and enjoy my bowl of grits now.

Cabin Fever, your supposed to eat lutefisk, not smoke them - the fumes can be disorientating, as apparently the case here. White corn is removed from the cob, dried, and then ground, there is no lye used to make grits. May I suggest you contact Lutefisk Annoymous.

Well, then you're not eating real "hominy" grits! All your eatin' is ground corn!

Lutefisk...............hmmm the closest I've been to lutefisk is watching Bobby Hill (King of the Hill) eat 30 servings of it at one sitting.

Unless of Norwegian descent, do not try eating lutefisk--you will learn the real meaning behind the term 'thar she blows'!

...just remembered this, sung to the tune of "O Tannenbaum":
1. O Lutefisk, O Lutefisk, how fragrant your aroma,
O Lutefisk, O Lutefisk, you put me in a coma.
You smell so strong, you look like glue,
You taste just like an overshoe,
But lutefisk, come Saturday,
I tink I eat you anyvay
2. O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, I put you in the doorvay.
I wanted you to ripen up just like they do in Norvay.
A dog came by and sprinkled you.
I hit him with my overshoe.
O lutefisk, now I suppose
I'll eat you while I hold my nose.
3. O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, how well I do remember.
On Christmas Eve how we'd receive our big treat of December.
It wasn't turkey or fried ham.
It wasn't even pickled Spam.
My mother knew there was no risk
In serving buttered lutefisk.
4. O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, now everyone discovers
That lutefisk and lefse make Norvegians better lovers.
Now all the world can have a ball.
You're better than that Geritol.
O lutefisk, with brennevin [Norwegian brandy]
You make me feel like Errol Flynn.
5. O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, you have a special flavor.
O Lutefisk, O lutefisk, all good Norvegians savor.
That slimy slab we know so well
Identified by ghastly smell.
O Lutefisk, O lutefisk,
Our loyalty won't waver.
(Words by Red Stangeland)

Ya doesnt has to been a Norsky to grow up eating lutefisk..... the Swedes am dumb enough to have thet inder diet as vell.... and always around the christmastime seasonings.
Never could really understand the lye soaking cept that after being stacked like cordwood for a few months the lye prolly kills anything growing on does fisklutes... as far as real grits am be concerned, it is soaked in lye water, to remove the outer hull, and washed several time to get rid of the pison..... but they is good, but it takes to long to do in an every day or even once in awhile homestead place so every now and agin we buy a couple cans of hominy grits when nostbody in the store is lookin our way. Other dan dat we cook good ole cornmeal from ground corn for mush-in-the-morn [I like to add oats to it so call me crazy] must be the Swede in me huh?

Okay, I have never heard of Lutefisk so I had to do a google search so I would know what everyone was talking about! I think I'm gonna hurl! Nah, it doesn't turn my stomach that bad, in fact it kind of reminds me of our version of Boardfish. Nail about a dozen sun perches on a board and set on top of the house for a few days. Then remove fish and throw away. Cut board up and serve. Serves a lot.

Grits are NOT soaked in lye. Grits are nothing but milled corn. Hominy is altogether a different item and hominy grits are exposed to lye.

Never tried it
Hi Y'all,
I'm an old Kraut from Southern Indiana. Love Sauer-kraut.
Hominy is okay, I can eat it.
Grits are okay. With milk & brown sugar, I can eat a lot of it.
Fried too, with syrup.
I never ever have tried lutefisk.
But what I "REALLY" like from Sweden or Denmark is "Akvavit",
or "Aquavit". I have two partial bottles in my freezer right now.
When we do the "Northern Holydays" it is goodt to have a
jigger or two, "straight-up", right out of the freezer.
Warm all the way down. We do a couple for New Years Eve.
Any of you like Aquavit? Bet it beats the Hela out of lutefisk.
Have a good-un

The question once was innocently asked. Hominy Grits?
and the waitress answered: "Oh, about 20"

Cabin, only difference between corn meal mush and grits is the consistency of the grind, meal is finer than grits.

Being dumb helps, but is not necessary. Eating lutefisk is a rite of MANHOOD. Only a real man can manage to eat a bowl of this indescribable foodstuff. Fortunately, you only have to do it ONCE a year, usually around Christmas for some reason probably associated with the winter solstice, the new year and jumping naked into freezing lakes.
Now before someone points out northern women also partake, please reread my second sentence and take a good look at these women. UFDA.
