First see if you are getting fuel and spark. We really dont have enough info. If I had to make a wild stab in the dark, would guess fuse for fuel pump since it seems to have happened all of a sudden. Next if you have zillion miles, I'd say fuel pump itself. ( I am assuming this car is fuel injected with electric fuel pump.) I really am not familiar with '90 Escort and not sure if its second generation 80s style with Ford engine or the later Mazda design(clone of Mazda323/protege). Mazda 323 around this year came both as carb and fuel injected so if its Mazda version, just possible its carb with mechanical pump. Sure could be timing belt but unlikely for it to go at idle. They usually go while you are driving down the road and they are under more stress.
Any other symptoms or did this just happen out of the blue?
Ok, google search is difficult since Ford has used Escort name worldwide for several years on several different cars. Here is a quote from an article on '91-'95 Escort in Canada (clone of Mazda323) :
A short in the fuel pump wiring on the 1991 to '95 Escorts may result a loss of fuel delivery and cause the engine to stall. A Ford dealer will install a fused jumper harness in the circuit, at no charge, on vehicles included in this recall.
Remember this is a Canadian recall so whether US version had same recall, I dont know. Your local Ford dealer should be able to tell you.
