splitting fieldsotne

I put a small fireplace in my cabin. I put the cement board around it. Now I would like to take some smaller ( 8 to 12 inch diameter ) stones from my rock pile and split them to put around the fireplace. Is there a good way to split them.? Is there a good reference book for doing the masonry work? Thanks LJ

Good goggles, a chisel and a hammer. Tap along a seam and most will split rather nice.

pick your seam
tap a shallow line with a hammer and stone chisel
keep tapping along the line

A gas powered cut off saw with a masonary blade saves a lot of time. Does cost more for rental, but is at least 10 times faster.
