Post USDA web resource?

Is there a gov't web site with USDA info on stuff like
how much grass does it take to raise cow vs pig vs goat....
how many pounds of meat for how much feed
how much grazing/ winter feed/ etc

I like books and tables. I hate ignorance when it can be avoided....

Most states have university extension sites with a lot of useful info. Try running a google for university extension and see what pops up.

You can find USDA material at http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usdahome

You probably won't find what you seek there because they don't consider that "real farming". They are controlled by the large agri-business interests that want to sell processed food, antibiotics, etc.

You best resources will be books from seasoned veterans.
For goats try "The Dairy Goat Journal" at http://www.dairygoatjournal.com/

or http://www.goatworld.com/

I really like Gene Logsden's new book "All Flesh is Grass". See http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

Oh trust me, "real" farmers need that info too! Antibiotics are a tool sometimes used by "real" farmers, but they don't solve everything! They certainly do not feed an animal through the winter.

The USDA is federal. That type of info is very much a local thing. I can run 30 head of cattle per acre per day on rotation. That would be just plain stupid to try in say....Nevada!

My local extension office is worthless. The state level is good for some things. They have a great guy in charge of grazing and he has been very helpful to me. He only knows cattle, but I've asked his opinion on many things, including chickens!

Take each problem seperately and research it. Find out the needs of cattle, then pigs, then goats or whatever. You'll have to do your own comparisons from there. Feed conversion varies alot by what you are feeding, the state of the animal, climate, etc. In farming, there are very few hard and fast answers. Everything depends....on something else.

In the end, the things that sound the best on paper are usually not all that great in real life. I've tried many things that sounded good, but were flops. Conversly, once I'm in the middle of it, the solution is sometimes very apparent.

I'm a USDA employee, and I don't think you'll find the info you seek on any of their sites. Not to mention, they're a nightmare to navigate. I agree that the extension sites are better, with more localized information.

For detailed grazing information. I'd recommend the book "Greener Pastures On Your Side Of The Fence" by Bill Murphy http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...37742?v=glance

In lieu of that, Penn State has some basic info available at...pss.uvm.edu/pss14304/Articles/4Stepsagfact43.pdf

Hope this helps......
