skinning a skunk

I'm just curious, does anybody out there know how to skin a skunk- without getting "skunked"? Any advice would be apprciated

well, the scent glands are under the tail .near the anus
i assume youre planning on using the hide, and thats why you want to clean it
first of all , find good solid rubber gloves, and then the blue safety gloves over them
skunks are known for rabies
take your knife and cut around the front paws, then remove the head using your knife, slip the hide off backwards, like a sock , it will be inside out, the anus will hang up on the hide, then when you get it pulled back you can cut around the anus, and pull it down the tail .

turn it right side out, and you will have a skunk skin sock

What do you do with the skunk after you've taken his sock off?

ok another thought was, before starting skinning, you can dip the skunk in to a deoderizing bath ...
i have heard from taxidermists, that you can dip the skunk in gasoline ... but then you have gas and skunk , since it really doesnt deoderize ...
skunk bath for animals might work ,
thats 1 cup peroxide
3 drops dish soap
1/2 c water and
1/4 c baking soda
wash your stinky friend with that, before skinning, still if you pop the scent glands youll be sorry !

personally i have never wanted to tan one , so never have tried
soak the fur in vinegar would stop the smell some too ....
but the hide will always retain some "eau de skunk"

Hold the skunk up by the tail and head with the exhaust gizzmo pointing away from you. Have your wife shove a corncob right up his tail pipe. Next you go on a fishing trip with the boys till the stink blows over.

I was just wondering if anybody had some great skunk recipes. Groundhogs, raccoons and opposums are all eatable. Something with onions and red pepper flakes and some potatoes to soak up the grease?

How about keeping the onions and pepper and potatos, and throwing away the skunk and putting a big ol steak under the onions and pepper instead? :haha:

Just for giggles I did a quick google search for cooked skunk and came up with nothing. Then using the key words "Fried Skunk" came up with quite a few links. The first one was interesting, with recipes for different meats.

My brother started to skin a skunk ONCE. The first thing he did was lift up the tail... :no:

I do believe my brother slept outside for awhile.

When making the incision from the rear heal to the other heal, stay very close to the base of the tail. Then cut a nice wide circle around the anus and genitals, leaving them on the carcass. Continue skinning turning the hide inside out, past the front legs, around the head and off at the nose. Hide is complete and useable for many things. The fur is nice and soft if it's prime, just before hibernation is the best quality. The general skunk smell will be gone after tanning. I have done many skunks picked up on the trap line, worth 6-10.00 dollars in the fur trade. Fun conversation piece just laying around, nice hats or ear muffs to.
