help need advice!

My dog has had an eye problem for a few days, he shuts it like its winking, today it looks 'cloudy' and there is a little stuff like sleep present. I have kittens in the house that play with him, could it be a small scratch that got infected?

I could be a scratch from the kittens. Use some sterile eye wash or saline to rinse the pus out. Look very close and check for blood spots. The actual lense of the eye should heal up quickly if there's no infection. If it's the eye lid it may take longer. You really should get him to a vet if it doesn't improve some by Monday.

Sounds to me like it could be a cornea scratch or something even more serious. The dog could go blind in just a few days from lack of attention. Plus the cornea scratch is very painful. If it were my dog, I'd take him to the vet as soon as possible---I hate to see them suffer. If it gets infected, then you will have more expense than you would have if treated promptly---it might result in the dog having to have surgery. $$$$$

A cloudy eye is a sign of injury.

I found this out when MY dog hurt HIS eye. The vet gave him antibiotic eye drops, which healed the eye fairly quickly. Unfortunately, I noticed the eye a little too late for him to keep ALL of the sight in the eye, as I discovered when I tossed him a bit of gristle. He missed, which was not like him.

He has learned to compensate.

Same thing happened to one of my dogs when we were on vacation. The friend watching our dogs didn't notice the eye injury. The vet prescribed antibiotic drops and the corneal tear healed up, but with some loss of vision.

If you can't get him to the vet right away, try using a little antibiotic ointment(something like Neosporin). You can put it in two or three times a day, using a cotton swab or something. I cleared up pink-eye in my dog doing this. It might help; won't hurt.

I'd suggest the vet. Eyes are tricky. I've seen some weird things turn up under the third eyelid of dogs, including shed sheaths of cat claws. The vet will check behind that third eyelid as a matter of routine during an eye exam, and make sure nothing is stuck back there causing further problems. The eye needs to be numbed for that to be done, it's not something that one can do at home...unfortunately.

Just thought I'd update on my pooch. He didn't have any scratches that the vet could see, she said it might have healed over already, but it could have been injured by a blow to his head. He is about 18 months old and such a clutz, always bonking his head on something. Anyway she said it was his whole eyeball that was infected, now at $186 later he is getting better, two different pills, two diff. eye drops, and one salve. Boy this is fun trying to get this stuff in his eyes :no:
Poor baby, thinks I'm punishing him. :waa: I think he has lost some vision in it, he used to be able to catch food tossed to him, now he can't. Why do these things only happen to your best animals? He is such a good dog, well behaved and charming, it's sad to think he might go blind in that eye.

Could be tick or west nile if antibiotics dont touch it it could be something else. I use borax to flush infected eyes.
