What Was Your Best Trade?
I've not made much cash money with my homestead but I've made some great trades that I've been very happy with. I raise wild pigs, heritage chickens, and eggs in sufficient quantity to sell or trade. My best trades this year have been a weaned piglet (dressed) for 2 big Caribbean lobsters and 2-3 pounds of crab claws. Yummy! :yeeha: That might have retailed for $50. And two almost new tires for my Jeep (new retail for $105 each) trade for a dozen eggs bi-weekly or so. Cost me just $20 to have them mounted. I like trading a lot. Never know what I will get. I've had to turn down some good trade offers for livestock that I didn't have a place for. What has been your experience?

I'm not quite sure if this counts, but I'm having a 12x12, barn built- so far it has only cost me a few dinners, and some housekeeping.
Hubby and I have a friend who recently divorced. He loved to build things, and he has been helping me with several projects lately. When we moved, I needed a new coop, and he designed one for me, comes over 2-4 nights a week and works on it. All I have to do is feed him a homecooked meal, and once a week help him clean/decorate his house.
He is the king of scrounge, so there have been very very little material costs.
(I"ll be posting pictures and the whole story after it is finished. It is wonderful!!)

Traded two hours of design work for 3 sets of doors for my house and a nice old mantlepiece.
Caryatid: Im jealous. I need a man like that to come help me on my place in Missouri. Ive offered to let a couple of barely employed friends here in Illinois
go down and live on my place for free in exchange for labor, but no one will take me up on the deal. I never thought about starving bachelors or divorce. HMMM.

Gosh, we LOVE to trade. I'm sure my all time best trade was a jersey bull calf, about 300 lbs, for a 16 x 24 metal building. Steve took the building down in one weekend, and we put it up here the next, posts and all. Also traded a box of chicks for a grader blade & a donkey Jack for a pull-behind bush hog. I've also traded allot with my Border Collie pups, got 13 large rolls of hay for one, 2K lbs of corn for one, a big pig for one, 300lb of live sheep, etc. We traded a breeding to our miniature stud for 5 big rolls of alfalfa hay. What'cha got?

I guess my best trade so far was trading life in suburban Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex for life on a farm in rural Mississippi.

I bought a paint mare for $400 cash, kept her 3 years, swapped her for a registered Santa Gertrudis cow that had a bull calf two weeks later, then sold the pair for $900. Guess that was a pretty good trade since I got one foal out of the mare to boot.
Once traded a 1/4 of a pig in exchange for butchering a pair of pigs and cutting them up.
Traded a colt for 1 mile of installed fencing.
those were my best trades.

I traded my profession as a massage therapist for boxes of beef--filets, sirloin, etc. Worked great for both of us at the time.

Hubby just took down a corncrib shed (drive thru) for the lumber, for a nearby couple. The lady had told me they had been wanting the building torn down for two years and she had recently told the fire dept. they could burn it for practice. EEEEK! Just in time, we found out about it. The barn on their property was built in 1881, so it's a good guess how old this crib was. Hand hewn, pegged timbers and 2x boards 15 inches wide on the floors.
I contacted a man nearby who had straw for sale, to purchase some for chicken bedding. We got to talking and he suggested making a barter, eggs for straw. So hurry up pullets, get ready to lay.

Best trade from my homeplace was my exwife and stepson to her new husband because they didnt like worm ranching
Seriously my worms are the best trade item I have as I barter them for meat, fish and outdated computer gear quite often.

I swap and trade a lot, but my best trade, by a mile, was a parrot and cage. I bought it for $50.00 from a college student who had graduated and was leaving town and couldn't take it with him. I traded it for for a young pair of Emus. Two years later the Emu craze was in full bloom, I sold several chicks from this pair for $1,000.00 ea. and then sold the pair for $15,000.00. If I had kept them another 3 months they would have brought $25,000.00. But I'm not complaining, they bought me a good tractor, paid for a new barn, new fencing, and my Dexter herd. Was just fortunate to be in the right place at the right time with an extra $50.00 in my pocket.

gallon of 100 proof blaberry brandy [homedistilled] for a $160 banjo..... blackberries pickered down on the river nad distiled from wine made here on the homestead.
or maybe a toss up a gallon of the same brandy and an old surplus helicopter winch [korean war surplus] for a model 97 pump shotgun.....
then this past year i traded 20 8 foot cedar boards for a 1700 cc VW bus motor..... and i think ive got that traded for 3 cord of firewood ..... the cedar i cut on my sawmill here on the homestead.

I once traded a snake for two goats. I've traded baby chickens for cockatiels, then traded baby cockatiels for baby ringneck parrots. Now I'm selling baby ringnecks and have gotten enough money to pay down on the land we just bought. I'm constantly trading baby birds for bird food so that they're paying for themselves. So I guess, in a way, over the course of four years, that I've traded 15 baby buff brahma bantams for down payment on three acres of land. Always keep trading up.

................I haven't done any trades in a while , but while scanning the shelves in my shop I spied a square, metal box with "DeWalt" on the outside . I knew it had been there for a while because it had a layer of Dust , but couldn't figure out What IT WAS . Lo and Behold , it turned out to be a
1/2 inch combination regular\hammer Drill . Almost brand new . I , absolutely , DOnot remember buying this item . It has to be atleast 4 years old . I , also have a Mikita 1/2 inch combo drill that I Always use , so Why I would Buy this item is a Mystery to me . I'm going by home depot tomorrow and see what one of These tools cost . I guess had I been married I would have been REminded of how Absent minded I AM . I , rather enjoy my senality , because I seem to have Forgotten ALL my mistakes and and bad habits , ....fordy...

My best so far is 400 free bales of hay & free hay every year I let the guy store some of his hay in my barn.

We trade and barter alot around here. Most profitable so far: one of the farmers aournd here bought a sprayer for our ATV so my husband could spray his (the farmer) fence rows. We are in really hilly country and the ATV gets in places tractors can't or walking with a sprayer would be tough.
Another farmer bought a seed spreader (throws a 30-ft spread) for our ATV, so my husband could sow down his (the farmer) hillsides.
For both of these farmers the deal was we got the equipment and they got free labor, but now all the other farmers have found out that we have the equipment and have kept my husband and son busy all spring and summer hiring them to spray fences and sow seed!

I don't trade much but have gotten a couple of good deals I think. I traded a six month old heffer for two ponies. A friend butchered two hogs last winter in exchange for half of one. This one has nothing to do with homesteading but the best trade of all I think was when I traded a friend a Rocket chassis and body for a Mastersbuilt rolling chassis with no body. I have made some pretty decent trades but most usually get the short end of the stick lol.
