Blood Blister

My dd did something to her big toe yesterday and has a huge blood blister on it, it is painful and she cant wear socks or shoes. Any thoughts to help her, would it hurt to pop it and drain the blood. I've never had one so big before, Mine have always been tiny. Any thoughts on what can help take some of the hurt away.

Jennifer

Try to avoid popping it. If it does pop clean it with soap and water and put an antibiotic ointment on it. They are painful. She prob needs some new shoes. She should go barefoot till it heals. People have gotten blood poisoning from blood blisters that became infected.

I know some people may run to the doctor with every scratch but personally we do not. Growing up with 4 kids 1 income no insurance and 30 miles to the doctor mama just "doctored" us and we healed up just fine. There is nothing wrong with going to the doctor but I think the "no brainer" is to realize alot of things just need a little time to heal and generally that is all you will get from the doctor "stay off of it a few days" and come back in a week for a checkup.

Thanks Tractor that is kinda how I look at things also. But never had one so big and not sure the best route to go, she 's been barefoot and inside since but was hoping there a "secret" quick fix to ease some of her pain.

You can give her tylenol. Avoid asperin and motrin. There really isn't a quik fix.

If it where on my toe, or on my child's toe, I would clean it, sterilze a needle and open it up, then bandage it in several layers to keep it clean. and Not doing anything that would hurt it or get it dirty until it was truly well.
But that doesn't mean it is the best or right way for anyone else to handle it.

a few years ago, I had a badly mashed finger with blood under the nail and drilled a hole throught the nail to drain it, that was a spooky/creepy feeling.

...slowly twisting a small drill bit through the finger nail until it passed all the way throught to releive the pressure...

I've gotten blood blisters on my hands a few times over the last year or so (since I moved out here and started weilding a hammer :haha: ).

They DO hurt --- but usually go away in a couple of days. Just nurse it along a little and it should be fine. I think I did pop one of the ones I got --- it wasn't particularly effective.

Where is the blood blister located on the big toe and what percent of the big toe does it cover, roughly? Is this from a blow or pinch to the skin on the big toe withoput breaking the skin or from something else, like secondary to a thorn or bug bite?

I never voluntarily pop a blister, blood or friction-type. I just clean and protect it, and disinfect if it breaks. Neosporin time.

Let me try again. I would wonder what happened to her toe? Could it be an infection? How old is the girl? Can she tell you what happened? The fact that you have never seen one so large is a cause for concern. If infected you may need anti biotics. I've had blood blisters but don't recall great pain. I have gout in my toes and they swell and get as red as a blood blister. I think young people can get this also. Best of luck and i wish well for the young lady. Steve.
