Strange bug!!!!

BIG UGLY BUG in the yard today. My chicks were trying to catch it but I don't think any of them would have known what to do with it. Pea green about size and shape of a golf ball. Flew away before I could catch it. Never saw anything like it before! Any guesses?

Not a katydid.

Yeah, like a golf ball! My month old chicks were trying to catch it! I googled all over the place and couldn't figure it out!

Gack!!

I have billions of grasshoppers right now, but they're more an apple green than pea green. And they're not that big.

Maybe it's some kind of strange, deformed or something-odd-going-on bug? The other day, I saw the most beautiful butterfly with three sets of wings. It settled in the grass and I got a close look at it --- and it was actually one live butterfly with two seemingly dead ones on top.

WEIRD!!! butterfly!! It wasn't a hopper. There are a number of pecan trees around here. It was about the color of the green nuts, but big and round. Wasn't a locust either.

A beetle? I found one once that I first mistook for a large birds egg! Gave it to a student who had a "bug" collection. Never learned the proper name for the beetle. Mostly green with grey/black splashes?

OK, found our "Simon & Schusters" bug book. Largest one I can find is a Hercules beetle, 40-60mm. This one is a yellowish green with brown/black speckles on its back. Looks like ya splattered the bacon grease on him.

It was a female. They apparently don't have the horn. Never knew they were in this area. Thanks.
