Shocking well

The neighbor has a deep well with a submerged pump. The water test came back bad so I need to put some Clorox in and test it again. I have never done this to a deep well, just my shallow well. Is this just a matter of taking the cap off the well and dumping in the Clorox? How much, a half gallon?

Don't forget to do every part of the plumbing system too.

A friend of mine shocked their well with too much bleach. They tasted bleach for months. They may also have not flushed every line when they flushed the bleach so it continued to bleed into their drinking water line.

I thought I had flushed all the bleach out when I did mine. Coffee made with water containing a high concentration of bleach tastes awful but the shock does wake you up. LOL

Our water used to have a smell resulting from iron-loving bacteria. But I shock my plumbing by using an inline water filter (like this one at https://www.freshwatersystems.com/p-...FYyRHwodYj4Big ), shutting off the water, soaking a filter in bleach solution, and then running water through this filter to each faucet. It really does the trick and only uses a tiny fraction of the bleach that you would use in the well. And, after you run a little bleachy water in each tap, you can then run a bunch of water out a garden hose so you are not shocking your septic system too.

Fishhead's document is good for small diameter wells. If you have a well both deep and large in diameter, the bleach requirement goes up exponentially.

If you are unfortunate enough to be working with one of these wells, here is the appropriate document: http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$departm...nsf/all/wwg411

It's been awhile, but I believe I need to use 4-5 gallons of 8% bleach to shock my well. It is a 50' x 30" casing and thus contains around 1500 gallons of water. With large diameter wells you also are recommended to pump up to 200 gallons into a tank, wait for recovery, and then backfeed the well to drive bleach into the aquifer.

Please note that while this is a great idea to regularly clean out your plumbing it is NOT a substitute for shocking the well. This will not sanitize your casing/pump/screens, which is where the iron bacteria can cause the real problems, slowly sealing off your aquifer and dropping your flow rate.
